So, I bought a microphone, it is just a generic headset microphone, and I cannot get sound out of it at all. No one can hear my on Skype, and I can't record anything in audacity....

I would post specifications to things, but I don't really know what to post, because I have not dealt with audio before.

Nope. I have everything set full blast. I cannot figure it out. It SHOULD be working. Audacity doesn't recognize it, skype doesn't work......

can you start to describe the setup you have a little? is it a USB headset? is it a mini-headphone jack plug that you've plugged into your computer's soundcard? have you recorded anything on your computer before? what's the model number/brand of the headset? when you go to System > Preferences > Sound what devices are listed in the Device menu? are you sure that all the input channels in gnome-volume-control are high AND the little speaker at the bottom does NOT have a red x on it? do you have any device around the house (maybe a tape deck) that you can check the microphone to make sure it's working and doesn't need a battery? etc...

It's just a little front microphone. It is a headset, no brandname though...thats what I get for throwing the box away. But I also have a usb microphone that doesn't work with ubuntu either, and they both work in vista. I know that I have unmuted everything.

Everything is ALSA in sounds.

Device: HDA ATI SB (Alsa Mixer)

many sound cards have a selector for the microphone input as they have ports in the front & back of the computer - you should check to see which is selected in the mixer app.
