Anyone who knows of a good strategy or RPG game, post it here!

Mine are:
Glest (GetDeb.com, FEISTY ONLY)
Globulation 2 (GetDeb.com, repositories?)

Eve online just released a Linux Client.
Neverwinter Nights used to have one.

As far as OSS, there are quite a few games which work with Worldforge, and there are several RTS games.

I like turn-based strategy games, so it's Freeciv and Wesnoth for me!

Check this page, currently big on Digg:

Widelands (http://xoops.widelands.org/) which is in the repositories is pretty good.
Boson (http://boson.eu.org/) is not bad either, also in the repositories.
I have had some fun with Stratagus as well, although the developers are now working on Bos Wars.

As far as RPG, I think the best hands down was Neverwinter Nights (http://nwn.bioware.com/downloads/linuxclient.html). Although, if you like MMORPG then Regnum Online (http://www.regnumonline.com.ar/index.php?sec=0&l=1) is a pretty nice game.

My favorite is Final Fantasy Tactics (with pSX). Yes, it's a game with an emulator, but it runs great in Linux, no rebooting, and no Wine/Cedega.

Plus with pSX it's easy to create a Launcher on the desktop to open the game directly so decent integration too.

True; in fact, console emulators in general offer a great way to access a very wide range of games. And there are now a fair number, like pSX Emulator, that will run very well and natively in Linux.

As far as launchers for pSX go, one of the pSX forum admins, Ultima, has written an excellent Frontend for pSX (http://psxemulator.proboards54.com/index.cgi?board=news&action=display&thread=1156715263). Since it works by modifying pSX' configuration rather than only creating terminal commands with switches, it can set up virtually every cofiguration aspect you want to run your game. Indispensable.

neverwinter nights is the best rpg for linux. the content in the game is jaw dropping...
When it comes to stradegy, i haven't found one that's really to my linking - westnoth and freeciv are OK, but just that. Alpha centauri is the only strategy game i really like in linux.

Darwinia as a strategy game.

I didn't like Boson - looks good, but the game isn't finished, and the project is dead as I understand it...

Don't play any rpgs, but I do remember reading that the neverwinter games, up to 2, run on linux. So I'll give them a try sometime :)

I'm not that big into Strategy games so I'll stick with RPGs.

Native - Neverwinter Nights
Via wine or cedega - TES IV: Oblivion

You can also go oldschool with free games like angband and nethack

Ya Wesnoth is ok, and you can design your own maps, but it can get pretty long (especially if you're like me and you design maps that are way too big).
Also, since we're getting into games that aren't in the repositories, anyone know any good sites to download games? My favorite (even though all of you guys probably have heard of it) is getdeb.com (http://www.getdeb.com)

Just search "linux games". Like the top 6 sites that come up are full of listings.

My recent fav is http://www.linuxgamingworld.com/games-catalog/, I'm going through the list slowly

FreeDroid RPG 0.10.1 is in the repositories, although several years out of date. 0.10.3 is available on sourceforge and can be compiled in a separate directory without the sudo command.

I know someone already asked, but my understanding was that if you owned the game, it was ok to have the roms. I no longer have a working playstation, but would like to play my old games on the computer. Is there any way to get legitimate roms?
thanks

No. It's still illegal to download Playstation game images (ROMs usually refers to cartridge rips rather than CD ones), stlcoptony, even if you own copies. But if you have the games, you can rip them yourself - see the HOW TO: Make Disc Images (http://psxemulator.proboards54.com/index.cgi?board=rules&action=display&thread=1195746305) thread on the official pSX forum for advice on this.

BTW, talking of RPG games - the topic of this thread - check out Eschalon: Book I (http://basiliskgames.com/book1.htm). It's a superb game, meant as a modern take on traditional RPGs like most of the Ultima series, Might & Magic etc. There's a Linux version, and it runs beautifully on my Gutsy installation.

Edit: BTW Eschalon: Book I is not free; but at $27.95 US, it's not exactly expensive for such an excellent game, and there's a free demo that's better than a lot of full games I've played...

I'm pretty happy with Dominions 3 (http://www.shrapnelgames.com/Illwinter/Dom3/1.htm) and Eschalon Book 1 (http://www.basiliskgames.com/book1.htm), but they're commercial games (both linux native, BTW).

If you're looking for free games, Battle for Wesnoth is the way to go.
