I have tried to use the search box, but everytime I do I get no results.

So I go in and type a new post and low and behold there is what I was looking for. Why cant the search box be as good as the new post box?

I think the search box searches within the forum you are actually viewing. You should use the search thingy, next to the "new posts" button.

Or is it the other way around?

Have you tried the advanced search tool?

Yes, next to the New Posts is the one I am referring to.

I have tried the advanced, but with no changed options.

I get no results, and then as soon as I get to a new post and type in the same thing as I searched as the title, I get 6 results. Almost always one of them is what I was looking for.

(I actually expected it to happen this time too....)

You mean, you get no results at all, or no relevant results? Sometimes viewing results as posts instead of threads you'll find information easier.

I've copied and pasted a thread topic staight to the search and got a "no result"
It obviously needs alot more work...:)

By the way, you can also use search engines to search through the forum.

If using the search top right, ensure you are on the forum home page else your search will only search the subforum you are currently in.

A specific thread may also not appear in the results for a few minutes after its creation.

I get no results.

I just think that they could use the same search backend that they use for the new post. That works perfectly.

I do not like using search engine's for it because they give me everything else too. It should be something that can be done in Ubuntuforums.org.

STILL bad. tried the plugin and I tried searching for "searching is bad" in the head forum here.

Neither "searching for bad" worked.

very sad. I'm sorry, but at least I'm honest about it.

That's because this thread isn't in the google cache yet. It's stated in the link I gave you. It's unefficient to constantly update a database with this size, everytime a new thread is created.

Just used the normal search tool to look for "searching bad" and this thread came up at the top of the list. Adding "is" made nothing show up. It just won't accept words less than three characters.

Yeah, it's not perfect. It doesn't quite reach the level of "very sad," though (IMHO).

if you start a google search with "site:ubuntuforums.org" it will only return results from here

You could also go site:ubuntuforums.org {search terms} on Google.

Here, its my proof. I just did it a second ago. I would like to know what steps you used to get this result.

Furthermore the plugin is using just ubuntuforums.org

No, really, This is sad. I like to help people here but it is hard to find what I want.

So how did you get to that point?

Like i said, it won't work if you include words of less than three characters. If you look at the screenshot, you'll see that the only terms I used were "searching" and "bad." I can see where this could create some problems, but most things can be found.

Well first, yes that worked. That was perfect. I am glad that you explained that for me and hopefully to other frustrated people.

Now second.

That is the dumbest thing I ever heard. Really.

That has got to be easy enough to fix.

searching is bad both global to site and within specific catagory. I find more help by accident on this site than searching. I am glad the responders don't flame when I start a new thread that has been covered as many other forums do.

Example I performed a search both at top right (global to site) and within the servers & security for e-commerce and yielded no results. When I searched ssl on the first page of results I saw a title with e-commerce in the title. I performed a prior search with ecommerce and yielded four results dating back to year 2005.

I also have used advanced search (entire thread/title only) with the same poor results.

I thought it was I who had poor search skills so I read up on technique. Glad and sad to see others having trouble.

Again I really get more help by accident and well a lot of reading (gets me much learning).

These forums do have the kindest and most helpful membership than any other forum I frequent!
