I had installed Gutsy a few weeks ago, and I was really happy with it, effects worked fine and the upgrade to the 8.42 drivers went smoothly. A few weeks ago they just stopped, no explanation, I had no direct rendering, and fglrxinfo showed the mesa drivers. I eventually got it working; I uninstalled fglrx and the restricted modules package, then installed fglrx from the ati website, then reinstalled the restricted modules package, and all went well.
I did notice, to activate the compiz effects I had to type "compiz --replace" into my sessions manager, like I did in feisty. Also, everything seems to work a little bit worse than they did a few weeks ago, also, after I got compiz back, all my settings were screwed up. Is there a difference between starting compiz in a terminal and having ubuntu starting it?
