How to change subtitles' color via mencoder?

How to change the color and background color of subtitles, which i render into movies via "mencoder"?

You can use the switch "-sub_bg_color [1-255]" to select a colour when playing subtitles... not sure if it works when encoding, though. I couldn't find anything in the man or google. Remember to post back if you figure it out! :D
