Installed 7.10 for a friend - tried to turn notifications on and while I can turn them on and 'apply' them - they don't work. When I go back into that section of the System Settings it will be de-selected.
Sound is OK - I can test the various sounds with the play button - and I can get audio with youTube.
What's the secret handshake?

What do you mean bu notifications?
Em, try
sudo apt-get install command-not-found comerr-dev
For the heck of it.

In the KDE menu, under System Settings | Look and Feel | Notifications, you can turn on sound and other events when such things as error messages, new windows and such appear.
I am trying to associate sounds with events such as new-window or shade-window. I can turn sound notifications on and then click on the 'apply' button, but the setting doesn't take effect. Further, when I go back and open System Settings | Look and Feel | Notifications, I will see that sound events are not turned on any more.

Well, after a reboot (or two) sound notifications have activated.
Now - why would you have to restart the system to get sound notifications to actually work? Remember: sound is working (in fact, you can play the samples in the notification setup window).
I now believe it's a bug.

Probably. Sorry for giving you GNOME advice.
