Do you like the name 'Ubuntu'? And I mean the sound of it, not it's meaning or the philosophy behind it. What did you think when you first heard 'Ubuntu'?

Remember, just the shallow, first-impression sort of thing; NOT it's meaning. ;-)

I've actually never heard it out loud that I can recall. I'm not sure how it's pronounced.

Oo-bun-too?

Oo-boon-too?

Uh-bun-too?

Uh-boon-too?

That's how I pronounce it. But as for the name...I really don't care. The name means nothing to me, neither does its meaning.

It rolls off the tongue real nice. :D

It doesn't conjure an image of a computer operating system like PCLinuxOS or OpenBSD, but that's part of why I like it.

Personally though, I love the name Slackware.

Yes, Ooboontoo is the official pronunciation.
(official IPA pronunciation: /ùbúntú/) according to Wikipedia.

I love the sound of the name and also the philosophy it represents.

The circle of friends icon is superb, I'm seriously considering having it tattooed on my chest above my heart.

The name and the OS itself are fine. Admittedly, I thought the name was unusual at first but I think it highlights just how unique the OS is...

I don't really care about the name, though it is unique.

I pronounce it oobuntoo.

You get used to it, besides, it's such a cool thing, that the oddity of it's name gets forgotten.

Take Firefox for example - what a name! But the browser is great, so the name is OK. Same here.

It's very fitting. The whole philosophy really fits in with the open-source theme of Linux, and it gives a fresh sound to the distribution.

When pronounced as "oo-bun-too", I rather like it. The official way to pronounce it grates on my ears, though.

Din't like it at first. I thought nothing of it at first. I started to really appreciate it nce I knew what it stood for and due to the feel of using it. The distro, the OS and the community seemed resonant with the name. The community, the name, the philosophy all link at a deep level.

I could not imagine the distro without the wonderful name, Ubuntu.

The name is very catchy to me.

I like the name. And it really does work well from a marketing perspective too.

It's a quirky, rememberable name that makes people go "You-Bun-two, what's that?" or "Oh yeah that Linux thing!".

Note: I understand that it is pronounced "Ooo-Bun-Two" but I find most people pronouce it "You".

I cant physically say that, nor can anyone I know.

I loathe the name.

It's unusual, but I don't have a problem with it.

When I first heard of it, my thoughts were, "It must be a pretty good OS for people to recommend it in spite of its strange name." Though at the time I was trying out Mandrake (which became Mandriva... now that's a dumb name).

According to Linus Torvalds - Linux is always pronounced Linux (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IfHm6R5le0) - but I expect people want to make it sound like Linus.

I used to pronounce Ubuntu with a short middle "u" until I listened to the Nelson Mandela clip.

The name is OK. If the guys behind it changed it to something else, I'd still probably be using the system. :)

When I first heard the name I thought, no way would I ever have an OS named Ubuntu. That's a silly sounding name. (I still pronounce it oo-bun-too because I think it sounds better than oo-boon-too.)

When I started seriously considering installing some flavor of Linux I wanted Slackware or Gentoo because I like the names. They're not really noobie friendly though. So then I looked at Mandriva, not as cool-sounding as Mandrake, but still nice, and SuSE, but I really didn't like the SuSE logo. So I got over my aversion to Ubuntu and I focus more on the philosophy behind the name. That makes it more palatable.

I also like the names Knoppix, Mepis and Damn Small. I'll probably never have any reason to use any of those though.
