I saw this link in wolfen69 sig...

http://badvista.fsf.org/what-s-wrong-with-microsoft-windows-vista

This is a good article that talks about Digital Rights Management (DRM) and the restrictions that Microsoft forces on anyone who is a windows user.

Lucky for us, we are linux users :)

It's all that but really it's WGA for me. DRM can be avoided by not buying or using anything that uses DRM--which unfortunately includes a lot these days. With Vista, WGA has the capability to lock you out of your computer. Microsoft has no business having the power to lock me out of my computer. They have no business using my network connection which I paid for for their own purposes whatever spin they put on it. This is why Windows XP is my last Windows OS.

BadVista is a bit iffy if you ask me, and far from being a reliable source of information.

DRM is there because it has to be there, and if you don't use DRM protected media (HD-DVD & Blu-Ray) You will never see it, and it will never run.

WGA is the major negative with Windows though, and Microsoft doesn't seem to get it that it's really not necessary at all.

i have seen vista force a licence check after installing new drivers for hard ware. it gave the user 3 days to connect to interent before it locked the system cos it wanted to talk to HQ and validate licence.

MS has done the world a favour by releasing Vista in its buggy state.it will make users wonder why they keep going on the "MS merry go round upgrade cycle"TM.

the best thing is it has introudcued a new level of hardware needed to make it run. awesome. when you scrub vista and install anything else, it will fly!!! yee-haw!

"Re-activation"...

I've changed my CPU, added a hard drive, changed my dvd drive, add ram (twice), added a firewire card, updated video drivers and Vista (and XP) didn't give a rip.

Not saying it doesn't happen, but I think it's mostly FUD...

Yeah I am using XP at the moment just untill my WoW addiction is satisfied, then I'll 100% move to Ubuntu. Currently I have windows looking just like Ubuntu Human hehe. I may, if I get bored sometimes try out virtualbox XP in order to run WoW but dunno yet.

Lucky you. The first time XP forced a reactivation on me, no hardware had changed at all. I had just installed a patch through Windows Update and that triggered the reactivation.

Well it sort of does on my comp lol. Yes I know WoW sort of runs on Wine however I have heard that WoW works better via WinXP in virtualbox.

I beg to differ. The Vista DRM system is active, not passive. A lot of it is running in the background checking stuff continuesly. There are breakdowns of it on the net with some documentation.

Hey tech9, did you get WoW working in VirtualBox? If so please share how because for me it does not even want to start the installer.

I haven't tried installing WoW, but i have installed other games. I installed and ran them from CD. Virtual Box should detect the CD in your drive. It could be different for WoW though. - best of luck to ya :)

Tech9, my problem is that virtualbox does not use my 3D accel card, it lists everything as software. So when I intalled Monopoly and tried to run it (yeah basic game Wine could even run) it said no 3D device found. Any clues?

Hi jbaerbock,

I have not come across that problem. You may want to post a new thread regarding your issue and hopefully someone with more expertise in the VM gaming category can help you out.

Sorry, I couldn't help more - Good Luck!

T9 :)
