View Full Version : Gutsy News, Discussion, and Packages to test!

Ok, things are looking good for Ubuntu CE "Gutsy". I apologize for the delay in getting the Gutsy release out. There have been several factors that contributed to the delay. The main reason is that my "main" system is out of commission indefinitely. It is a long story, but let's just say I am using a much slower backup system. I have also been working on a few other projects including my new Christian video sharing site, www.TheJesusTV.com (http://www.thejesustv.com). So anyway, let's get to the release info.

For now the main thing that I am working on is getting the size of the iso down to 700mb. It has always been my goal to keep the distro to one disc in order to make it available to as many as possible. However, there has been some discussion of making it a DVD release. From a development standpoint this would be much easier but I am not sure how I feel about it. I would like to hear all of your thoughts.

I also have the major Ubuntu CE packages ready to test. Below you will find links to the proposed Gutsy packages. Keep in mind that these have not been fully tested so you will be using them AT YOUR OWN RISK!!

Please report your successes and failures with these packages on this post.

Dansguardian Install Script (http://www.whatwouldjesusdownload.com/bin/install_dansguardian_gui_gutsy.tar.gz)
eSword Installer (http://www.whatwouldjesusdownload.com/bin/esword-ubuntu_1.7_all.deb)
TheWord Installer (http://www.whatwouldjesusdownload.com/bin/theword-ubuntu_1.2_all.deb)
Virtual Rosary (http://www.whatwouldjesusdownload.com/bin/virtual_rosary_ubuntu_1.1_all.deb)
IEs4Linux Installer (http://www.whatwouldjesusdownload.com/bin/internet-explorer-6-ubuntu_1.9_all.deb)

Thanks and God Bless, Jereme

Hey!!

Here's my comments on the Dansguardian installer, as you've requested them.

- Looks like you did a find and replace to change "Feisty" to "Gutsy" in the script. The first popup states a couple times "...used on Ubuntu 7.04 (Gutsy Fawn)". LOL. Thought I should mention that.

- My first go, I didn't run in terminal (forced habit), so the installation got hung up half way with no way for me to intervene, and I decided I'd reboot and retry, but because it got far enough to break my internet, it can no longer access packages on ubuntu's repos. I'd suggest an "undo changes" script that will let you start over, in case this happens.

All in all, the script worked like a charm, and I love the GUI. Thanks! Great work!

I'm going to have to feature this on Category5 TV once there's a release version available. I'm a Christian technologist. Well, a "technologist who is a Christian" is probably a more accurate way to say it. :) Our show caters to mainstream viewers as much as anyone. I looked at your video site and wanted to sign up so I can share my tech features with your community, but never received the authorization email. I'll be thrilled to review CE "Gutsy Fawn" (LOL) on the show though, regardless. I may even hold off upgrading my main PC to Gutsy just long enough that I can do CE instead.

Hey Jereme,
I just installed the dansguardian gusty GUI, and everything seems to be working fine.

I’m not sure if this can be done, but it would be nice to be able to configure dansguardian for each user differently from a central administrative account. Right now it seems that all accounts have the same restrictions. Maybe something you can work on for the next release.

On another note, I have an idea about the way you can release the next version of Ubuntu CE.
You mentioned that you weren't comfortable making a DVD release perhaps because it may make U:CE inaccessible to some people, and I agree with you. But I also think that you shouldn’t limit features just because of space requirements.

My idea is to create a DVD version of U:CE, and a U:CE converter for the plain CD version of Ubuntu.

This would allow those without a DVD drive or those who already have gusty installed to have all the benefits of U:CE without having to upgrade their computers or reinstall their OS. I know this can already be done for the most part by using some of your scripts, but I think it would be easier for users to have a nice GUI do it for them. I’ve included a mockup based on EasyUbuntu of how it might look.
I’m not much of a programmer, and am pretty new to Linux so I’m not sure how hard this would be to do, but I think it would make the transition from Ubuntu to U:CE much less painful.

Thanks for letting me know how it went for you. I also appreciate your suggestions. It would be nice to have different restrictions for different accounts.

I have toyed with turning the convert_me script into a full blown GUI that can be installed as a .deb package. It could work much like the eSword Installer. I really like your mock up and it makes me want to do it.

I forgot to thank you for all the work you've done to make the internet a safe place on ubuntu. Without your dansguardian GUI, I don't know if I could continue using linux.

Thanks again for all the great work you do and I hope you continue to help out the ubuntu community. I'm not sure how you feel about it, but I think your parental controls would make a great addition to the standard ubuntu distro.

I can't thank you enough, (I donated to U:CE)

It would be awesome to have more exposure for my project. I really appreciate it.

We're going to feature the dansguardian installer for plain Gutsy in this week's show - Tuesday night at 7 Eastern. Is there anything I should know before we do that? Do you want any specific mentions? Also, where should I point the viewers, just to this thread? Or do you have an "official" download page where the current version can be downloaded?

Sorry, you never received the authorization email from TheJesusTV.com.

I finally received it--so no worries. Thanks. I've uploaded a couple videos to get started. Not sure how big you want to make this site, but it's looking really nice.

Blessings - and keep up the great work on such a wonderful project! It's so wonderful to see an "easy to install and configure" parental filter.

PS - what license are you releasing the scripts under?

e-Sword installer is confirmed to work under somewhat customized Gutsy.
Thanks for your great work, Jereme.
Happy thanksgiving! --cooking ham right now :)

Oh, I had one thought about Ubuntu CE release strategy. Ubuntu comes w/ the version #'s like 7.10, 7.04, 6.10,... and people are informed that the next release will always arrive in 6 months. As a result, people are not going to be impatient b/c they know exactly what to expect. Perhaps Ubuntu CE can have version #s like 7.12, 8.06, etc if you plan on releasing the CE 2 months after the parent Ubuntu.

That way, people will know when to expect it and won't feel frustrated.
The reason why I mention this is because I found myself using Ubuntu CE packages, but not the Ubuntu CE as a whole any more b/c of my impatience related to the issue above. Also if you can include all the security updates already installed in the Ubuntu CE 7.12, for example, you'd have another sales point that it's "more stable" than the parent Ubuntu out-of-the-box, etc. I think this simple version numbering scheme would boost the adaptation of Ubuntu CE. Just my 2 cents :)

Was wondering how big of a change is there going to be on your upgrades to gutsyCE. I have played with your conversion script quite a lot. Re-Installed with it a few times. Works great. Looks and works exactly as the feisty version. Didn't want to get to attached to the present install if your going to have extensive changes.

The only changes for the next release are the fact that it will probably be a DVD release.

I seem to be having the same problem with this version of e-Sword that I was with the older Feisty one. I am able to get e-Sword to install, but the module manager won't work. Is there any known fix for this?

Tom

Hi Tom,
I have had that problem before as well. It seems if there is any residue of previous esword installation, the module manager does not work. I seem to recall you can start it by directly invoking the script file in /usr/local/apps/esword4linux/-i-forget.

But for a workaround, I've always been using the esword files in the esword folder from the Windows installation. You can just put all the files in (and overwrite) /usr/local/apps/esword4linux/.esword/drive_c/Program Files/eSword/ (if I remember correctly).

I ran the Dansguardian script.

I found a couple of little things I wanted to note. In the Read Me for the script, line 26 has an error:
"***Note: This script should only be used on Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Fawn)."
replacing (Gutsy Fawn) with (Gutsy Gibbon) would be less confusing.

Also, when Dansguardian is running, some things stop working in virtualbox which is running a windows XP instance. I am note sure if this is a big deal, but I thought you might like to know. The main problem I am having looks to be a DNS issue possibly? File shares can't be connected to and outlook can't connect to the exchange server. If I disable Dansguardian, they start connecting again. Weird. I am running WICD instead of Network Manager, so that may have something to do with it.

The third minor issue is that dansguardian can't keep up with 128k mp3 streaming music. 56k works fine, and 128k works fine without dansguardian running. I am running a Intel Core 2 Duo laptop with 2 gigs of RAM, so I don't think it is the machine. Maybe it's the proxy interfering some how.

How Do I uninstall the script if I wish to do that. I didn't see any instructions for it in the Read Me.

Thanks for all the work you have put into this.

So I just ended up downloading the .exe installer from the e-sword site and installing it manually.

I was very glad that I could install Dansguardian again on Gutsy, but after a reboot and some configuring, suddenly I logged out for some unknown reason, and now GNOME is totally broken. Every time I log in, whether it is after a fresh boot or not, there comes a message saying that the GNOME session ended within 10 seconds.

I tried to remove dansguardian and firehol by apt-get in recovery mode, and I tried to reinstall ubuntu-desktop, but mij internet connection is totally broken! I can't install and update now.

I think firehol is always messing up my Ubuntu installation. When I had Feisty I also had Dansguardian + Firehol installed and my pc became a mess sometimes. After uninstalling firehol the problem was over most times, but not this time.

Does any of you have a solution for this problem without reinstalling Ubuntu from scratch? Now I have to use M$ Windows, and that is not what I prefer to do... :(

Thanks for letting me know. Those few issues do not surprise me. Dansguardian slows things down a bit.

I will fix those little "typos" and such once the release is ready. Thanks for letting me know about them.

To do a complete uninstall you can do the following.

sudo apt-get --purge autoremove dansguardian, firehol, tinyproxy, clamav

Jereme,

Sorry about that. I will have to check that out. The eSword installer uses a dedicated Wine directory. I will have to recheck things.

Hi Kaaiman,

Welcome to Ubuntuforums.org!
This may not be related (b/c I don't see how dansguardian install could've done this), but when I was messing with file and directory permissions in my home directory, the same thing happened to me. Are you sure that all the hidden files / directories are owned by you and that they have the correct permissions?

Also did you try to install firehol in addition to Jereme's dansguardian package?
If I recall correctly, in the recovery mode you are root, correct? You might do
su yourusername
and poke around and see what you find out. Anyway sorry to hear your troubles, but without brave souls like you to test brand new packages, good things like Ubuntu CE wouldn't exist :)

In thory, it will work with any Debian based distro. In practice, you may have to modify part of the script that installs it.

Due a major redesign of e-sword.net, the e-Sword module installer may not work.

I just did a fresh install of Ubuntu 7.10 and ran all the updates. Then I downloaded and ran the script for installing DansGuardian posted at the beginning of this thread. It appeared to install fine. I rebooted and then Ubuntu notified me that some additional updates were available, so I installed those and rebooted again. I then opened the DansGuardian GUI just to make sure it would open, and it did. Then I tested filtering on the box that I did all this on, and it works fine. So it appears I have a good install of DansGuardian with the CE GUI. This is just a test machine, so I did all this to make sure it went smoothly before I install it on the intended machine. The whole purpose if this is that I want to use the intended machine which is running Ubuntu 7.10 as a parental controls proxy server for my son's Windows PCs.

Previous to this latest install, I tested an install of Ubuntu CE 7.04 as a parental controls proxy server and it worked fine. I pointed my son's PCs at the IP address of the CE box at port 8080 and they were filtered. (I'm the person that posted the success I had with that in the CE forum. If you read that, I filtered their PC's MAC addresses out at the router level, and in that way they can only access the Internet through the proxy server.)

But using the box as a proxy server doesn't work with the standard Ubuntu 7.10 with the CE version of DansGuardian installed per the script provided in the thread. Is there a different port I need to use other than 8080?
