I am starting this thread for gOS Talk on this forum.
I downloaded the Live CD, liked it since I use almost all Google Applications and installed it. I did not have Gutsy.
I have problem with Exalt Network Manager. It accepts static IP address but does not configure /etc/network/interfaces file for static IP and just accepts the IP as if it has arrived from DHCP server. On reboot it again tries DHCP. The network works anyway.
The E17 desktop is nice with 2 pre-configured shelves. The bottom one with Start button and ibar with icons which scroll when you move the mouse and an ibox which shows icons of minimized applications. The second shelf is on right side with Clock and Exalt gadgets.
I don't use Facebook. I could make a web application easily for orkut by clicking on Configuration/My_Settings/Applications/New_Application
Multimedia codec support is out of the box.
I added gEdit since there was no text editor.
Very nice and user friendly experience of E17 desktop.

i just downloaded the live CD
here what I like
very simple theme, easy to find icons and built in shortcuts to often used google apps.
uses ubuntu as its basis, should be easily updatable.
doent need too much in system resources
what i dont like
the friendster icon "F" is next to YouTube's Icon looks like F You...
analog clock with no dials...looks like a bad movado watch.
Desktop seems two demensional and not very sharp.
Has only Google apps, alot of people would like to have a system installed Office Suite so that they dont have to rely on a constant internet connection.
during boot the screen turns brown before turning green... this is a Ubuntu issue that gOS didn't take care of and is a simple fix.
In my opinion gOS is nearly a linux mint ripoff using that decided that E17 (a beta mind you) and google apps was a better choice than OpenOffice and XFCE

Not impressed so far...
Downloaded, checked md5 sum ect... verified with brasero also, burned fine and at low speed, pretty sure this isn't a bad burn,
Booted live cd, after boot screen x just kept restarting and would not work at all. Never had any distro do this before.

Linux Mint is an Ubuntu ripoff. :)
Then I guess gOS is a ripoff of elbuntu but with a green background. :)

I tried the live CD on my Thinkpad but for some reason it hangs whenever I try to do anything. (Checking out the menus, clicking an app on the ibar, editing the shelf...)
I used to have E17 on my default X/Ubuntu install (desktop/laptop) but got it deleted on both machines when I did a clean install. Was interested on seeing what gOS might offer besides what's on default E17.
Edit:

Hi, I installed gOS on a Fujitsu B Series laptop and everything works pretty good except the wireless networking and the mouse scroll. I can get the mouse to scroll if I edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change the mouse setting from IMPS/2 to ExplorerPS/2. I'll save the file, Ctl Alt Backspace and when X reloads it scrolls fine. But when I reboot, xorg.conf has reverted back to IMPS/2. Any suggestions?

you need to set i bar to be on top in settings or auto hide to get full screen, just as you can do in windows and any linux distro, simple if you look at settings.

Their is a lot missing in Gos a lot of settings don't work, no theme switcher to change icons or internal themes, no proper file manager as default the file manager provided was abandoned in Elive as its got memory leaks, and where is the recycle still under development they tell me.

I figured out how to prevent gOS from re-writing the xorg.conf file everytime it reboots.
sudo apt-get remove xdebconfigurator

I was also wondering why it tries to reconfigure every time you boot. Perhaps it is a way to configure any new hardware connected.

There is an option to check the integrity of the CD on boot menu. Try it.

This message coming to you from suziequzie's virtual gOS!
I'm running it in VirtualBox as I type this. It's not bad. I can see this being an ok OS for someone who is not familiar with computers, but wants to just get online and listen to music and browse family pictures.
I explained it to my sister like this: Not everyone needs a Formula One racer, or a Rolls Royce, or a Hummer... some people just want a little beater that they can use to get to work, get the groceries, and won't cost them too much in fuel or upkeep. That's what this OS, as it is first off, feels like. Added to a low end PC, it is a good little commuter car.
At least it's highly customizable (synaptic, Ubuntu repositories, etc) for those who want to learn about such things and play with the system. I think it's a good intro for new computer users. Note: I did not say "New to Linux", I said "New to computers." Nothing to unlearn, no expectations to be dashed about not being able to install their Win games.

Sorry about that. On elive this option is available, but it doesn't work. I guess gOS is far more stable than elive. :)
elive's e17 start button doesn't even work on elive 1.0.

I am on the gOS live CD and have been for about an hour. It is a very sleek GUI and fast for me.
I only used it to play with, and generally stick to Fluxbox.

Nice analogy, suziequzie. And on the $200 Everex Pc or something similar, it provides a cheap and very easy introduction for those who can't, or don't want to, get into the "entry" level Windows or Mac scenes.

She's into cars and automechanics (if I ever get my license, I'm bringing her car shopping. She knows what to look for, mechanically speaking). I'm her tech-support, she's going to be my mechanic (at least for maintenance and small stuff).

Either you have to do it through command line utility "adduser" or install "users and groups" through Applications/System_Tools/Add_Remove

I had to rename entries for my favourite menu in the e17 folder in elive, there isn't a working utility for that in elive. So is there a program/utility for modifying the favourite menu without deleting files within some e17 folder in gOS?
markupstart

yes, just go to the menu>configuration>my settings>menus>favorites menu, then just add or subtract which programs you want to show as your favorites.

I installed gOS and the exalt network manager hardly has any options. How do I connect to a Wireless network that has a WEP key? If there isn't a solution is it possible to install the default ubuntu network manager without an internet connection?

Molom,
I finally got wireless networking to work on a Fujitsu B series laptop using a Realtek PCMCIA card. You won't believe it but the network manager Exalt actually was preventing me from getting a wireless connection. Just run Synaptic and search on "exalt", then uninstall any program that is associated with exalt. There were about 4 or 5 of them installed by default. You will then have to manually define your essid and wep in the file /etc/network/interfaces. I won't tell you here, but there are plenty of howtos on the internet for that.

ok i'll try that out this weekend thanks for that. What I can't understand is that everone knows that e17 is in alpha stage is now starting to develop and gOS places e17 apps that arn't stable or user friendly at all and are selling computers with gOS pre installed. Why not stick with the gnome network manager and thunar for the file manager. If gOS has some gtk apps they should stick to gtk apps. I haven't passed through a proper e17 distro yet. But gOS was the most polished so far, but with some downfalls. I am sure once e17 becomes a full DE, it will be the future of DE's. I don't think anyone can argue that e17 is one of the fastest DE's beat XFCE by far and brings the best eyecandy any fluxbox, xfce or beryl WM/DE will ever give. I hope this apple guy from gOS switches the close button and others to the right side becasue I'm sick after using mac os X after 3 years. :)

the friendster icon "F" is next to YouTube's Icon looks like F You...
If you look next to it, there is also a B.S. next to the F-you.
It goes F-you B.S. (with a wikipedia icon in between)

This is a little off topic, I just tried out Geubuntu. It is built with Ubuntu, Enlightenment and has some Gnome elements (such as a network manager that actually works). They have two different themes, Daylight and Moonlight. The Moonlight theme is very attractive. It also has some 2D graphics eye candy, which is good for me because my laptop will not support Compiz. It is also a live CD so you can test it out before commiting to an install. I think it is a little more polished than gOS, a lot prettier and much less of an advert for Google than gOS.

There are some few options:
Elive - I wouldn't say its the best (They charge money or in elive's terms a donation)
gOS - Better than eLive, but there are some bugs like the network manager and the file manager.
geubuntu - I would say to wait a week or two, because version 7.10 is coming out soon and 7.04 isn't that stable.
Yellow Dog Linux - don't touch it, they charge money
Linux Mint (e17) - They might have the proper release next year. Beta one is coming out next month.
Elbuntu - Haven't tried it, but it looks stable.
They all use e17. I would say wait for the next geubuntu release, which wont take long or try elbuntu. The developer of geubuntu needs some help with the debs, but that wont take long. If you are desperate for an OS now, I would suggest Xubuntu, which uses XFCE.

Hallo everyone, please visit the Geubuntu home page, I don't need help with deb packages anymore, learned how to manage them :)
Packages for Prima Luna has already been released. And they can be tested and installed on any *ubuntu system without any fear of creating errors in it. In any case, Geubuntu Luna Nuova (7.10) will come out in a few days :)
Thank you for the attention.

I tried it out today on my spare laptop (ancient Dell flavoured) and have mixed reviews - all in all, a great beginner's OS. Things I noticed:
0. My liveCD wouldn't boot normally - had to go in as safe mode (prob the laptop);
1. Failed to install without internet capabilities;
2. Once it had access to the internet, it repeatedly asked to set up my SAMBA server - now, *I* know what that is, but Joe Noob doesn't! Also, many of these computers are going (hopefully) into a house as a first computer. Who needs a server? Good to have included, but shouldn't setup without a "I need to connect to other computers in my location" menu item.
3. No real good explanation for the whole not playing DVD thing. Needs to be explained for newbies better.
All in all, fast, nice looking, worked without much configuration and was happy. This afternoon I installed Ubuntu over top of it to try something else! :)
