Wow this release is great, everything is working perfectly, I don't think I've experianced tht with linux yet haha. For some reason it actually seems alot faster than ubuntu although I'm not sure why it would be.

Wouldn't run on my lappy, the vesa driver garbled my screen. I didn't have time to really play with it tho, so I'll give it a more thorough go later. Mint has always done me well, so I'm sure a little tlc will make it work just fine.

I started using 4.0 as a beta and did a fresh install of the final. I have not had a single glitch of any sort yet with Daryna.

What's up with the torrent!! I can't download Linux Mint! What's wrong with my connection?! :mad:I'm peering at ~40kbps and seeding at ~30kbps, using Deluge 0.5.4.1 on Gutsy. No problems with either at the moment.

After playing a little, Mint 4.0 is working very nicely. A little better than Ubuntu 7.10 actually (power management appears improved). As long as I don't have the same GCC issues as I had in ubuntu, it might stick around.

Err... wtf is up w/ gcc in *buntu distro's?

I have LinuxMint 4.0 on my Toshiba laptop and one of my desktops. Great Distro!
I had no luck with Bittorrent and gave up in favor of direct download. I had the best download speed from the 42_labs mirror.

Because it's running a modified version of XFCE.

Daryna final is the Gnome version. The Xfce community edition's final release has been delayed.

is it really better than gutsy?
it should basically BE gutsy with a few on the top changes. no deep changes are made right?
at least nothing that shold effect power managment, or system responsivenes.
it's the same kernel, same gnome etc...

na , I don't prefer it , I like it but.......

the dev is Norwegian or thereabouts so they don't have to worry about the codecs being illegal and such.

i played with the live cd for a few minutes, but finally got around to installing it and using it for a while. great job Clem! i havnt had one hesitation, hitch, glitch or twitch. it runs absolutely perfect. i know ubuntu should run the same if setup correctly, but for some reason there is always something that isnt perfect. i have yet to find anything in mint that hasnt been perfect. it has a very smooth feel to it. anyone debating giving this a try should definitely check it out. you'll see what i mean once you use it.

+1 I agree that Mint is a perfect, polished, elegant distro. IMHO it is better than Ubuntu.

I don't know what they did to the Gutsy base, but they did something right. It's like the Eveready bunny, It just keeps going and going and going.......:)

It is the same kernel and the same Gnome and all that, but Mint is missing some daemons and background services that really bogged Ubuntu down. Now, I've never really used Ubuntu, per se, so I'm really talking out of my azz, but this is what I've read. I think Mint yanked out Beagle and the Update Manager. In particular, I think Beagle was a big resource hog. And perhaps some others are missing. Overall, Mint Daryna is a work of art. Fast, responsive, great "out of the box" experience, and darn intuitive.

That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it.

they added an update manager in 4.0 called MintUpdate. they rank the updates from 1 to 5 according to how safe they are to install without borking your system.

Beagle has nothing to do with it, as beagle has never been part of the default Ubuntu install anyway.

Gutsy isn't using Beagle, but Tracker. Tracker is only a pain in the first fifteen minutes of using Gutsy for the first time. It's not very demanding on the resources after that, at all (barely notice it is there).

I have used Mint until Celena. I get an isolinux error when trying to boot the Celena/Daryna cd's at the first menu screen:

isolinux: Disk error 01, AX = 4280, drive 73

The only option is to reboot by hitting the (reboot) button on the error dialog box that pops up over the top of the boot menu. I really want to use Mint, but can not figure out what is causing this. The medium and iso's are good. I've burnt cd/dvd's on three different machines. No other linux distro ever had this error. I talked to Clem on the Mint forums, and he had no idea. The boot files are supposed to be exactly the same as Ubuntu. Any ideas?

dpar
November 22nd, 2007, 09:50 PM
I did a google and came up with this......

isolinux is a Linux boot loader (http://syslinux.zytor.com/iso.php). It
is responsible for getting the Linux kernel and initrd images off the
CD. Once it's done that, it hands over control to the Linux kernel, and
stops running. The kernel is what detects your hard drives.

So an isolinux disk error message is an error message about the CD disk
or drive.

You could try re-burning your CD, possibly with a different brand.

You could try swapping out your CD drive for a known good model.

You could try using diskboot.img to boot from a USB pen (and then, if
necessary, do a network boot).

I figured out from the syslinux forums that the 01 disk error was BIOS related. I had taken Vista off my new PC. I reinstalled it last night, updated the BIOS from the HP website, and Mint loaded with no errors.

Hi guys, is Mint 100% compatible with Ubuntu packages ???

67GTA
November 23rd, 2007, 06:01 PM
Mint Daryna 4.0 is compatible with Gutsy repos. The Celena 3.0,3.1 versions are based on Feisty. Mint 4 and Gutsy use the same repos except for the Mint repos that hold the Mint apps. You can use the Mint 4 repos in Gutsy also.
