Hi Peeps,

I realise this question has been asked before, but not since gutsy was released.

I'm about to enter in to a contract for a dedicated box that will be mainly used as a staging LAMP server, and it needs to be of production quality and stability.

My feeling is to go with Debian, but I'm open to Ubuntu as I use it on the desktop and love the freshness of the packages etc.

Any suggestions or experiences that might help me make my mind up?

Thanks in advance

Basically Ubuntu Server and Debian are the same. Personally I think Ubuntu Server is a bit easier out of the box. So if you want to just stick in the CD install and have it work right away go with Ubuntu. But if you don't mind playing around a bit or want everything super customized Install Debian etch over a long weekend. your gonna need lots of time :)

I'm kinda in the same situation. My today's server has been running Debian Etch for a very long time but has become more and more slow as the traffic is getting more. I'm thinking of get the latest Ubuntu Server Edition (7.10) in it this weekend, just like you say, newer packages of everything is included. ;)

I hope it's better. But it's pretty much the same to be honest.

Just make sure you set the mysql root password if the installer doesn't prompt for it
