The enlightenment live cd "e-live" is out with version 0.3

http://www.elive.xasein.com/download.html

It looks really good and shows of a lot of the e17 features. It's a live cd that can be installed and is debian based. Looks like e is getting a lot of press lately and I think this release will help.

The more interesting part:

9/07/2005 - Works in a less than 120 Mhz machine and 64 Mb of RAM

So what do you think? After trying it out for a while (with E17 of course) I'm quite impressed with the improvement over the first release. It still segfaults however, but it did recover without so much as a blip.

To be perfectly honest, all of the effects like drop shadows, sparkling backgrounds, titlebar lightning et all, but still smooth and with a low resource footprint really does make me wonder even more what the story is with Gnome. If E17 can get to the stability of E16 (though it's already quite usable) I think there's a serious contender here.

What were your impressions? Has anybody tried an install?

I tried an install but it installed E16... maybe I missed an option or something, I wasn't really paying attention. I'll have to ask to see if E17 can be installed.

As far as I know iconbox (ibox) is in the modules section and should be built. Just enable it and it should show up.

this livecd is awesome. you can also use the "toram" option when booting if you have a good amount of ram, and it will make it VERY fast.

My least favorite thing about E17 is how you switch tasks. As soon as someone build an "Expose" module I'll be hooked.

from the path they're taking, it seems alot of Mac OS/X things are gonna be cloned ;-)

The other thing I am waiting for is a cool minimize trick....kinda like E16 but better.

OSX has the "Genie Effect," while the best Linux has now in a modern DE is "no effect".

Hmmmmmmm. I can't seem to get either E16 or E17 started.
All I get is "Fatal error: no screens found." I'm
submitting this message with Lynx because I can't get X off
the ground. (It turns out I can use vi to fill the text
box!) Is this a common error? It'd be nice if I could
get this working; otherwise, a CD-R and a lot of
downloading time wasted. (I assume Lynx is not intended to
be a big part of the E17 experience.)

[edit: I got X to start by booting the "graphical problems" option. It didn't find the right resolution for my screen, but that's to be expected; so far Ubuntu's the only one that got that right.]

I've never seen a window manager with prettier windows than E17. The theme "Default" is pure eye candy. However, it does segfault every couple of minutes (but can usually recover). Also, there's a bug/flaw in drop-down menus: they can go off the screen, making them often unusable. "Cleanup Windows" is neat, but could be smarter. The icon box is good.

I also tried E16. This looks a lot more functional and complete than E17. It doesn't have the bugs I mentioned above. Also, the pager and iconbox are better. The window manipulation inside the pager is a really neat feature, although sometimes it doesn't let me move windows toward the bottom, strangely.

eLive is very cool indeed. I seem to have a few problems though with various things. It doesn't detect the crystal audio soundcard on my dell notebook (even alsaconf won't find it) and so no sound for me...

It's weird as it definitely works with Knoppix (initiating startup sequence!)

yeah... that's really odd... Elive is based on Morphix, Morphix based on Knoppix
