just picked up an old computer for nothing, and thinking of setting it up as a media player, it has a 1ghz cpu, 256mb of ram and a 40gb hard drive, my tv has a pc in port, so im going to use it on this tv.

i tested the geexbox cd and i love it, i just purchased a 1gb cf card and a cf to ide adapter from ebay, under £10 for both.

i was going to put geexbox on the cf card, and use the 40gb hard disk for xubuntu ( i will use xubuntu to help me organize my files, and edit any files i need to change to set up geexbox) and to store the media files, i know that 40gb is not much in terms of media files, im, just going to test it out to see how i like it, and if i do i will get a larger hard drive for media files.

i just wanted to hear what other people think of geexbox? and if there are any tips people can give me to make my geexbox life easier

Actually it's interesting to hear that you liked it so much. I tried it a month or two ago but it wouldn't start up for me on two different machines, so I kind of dismissed it out of hand. I hear it's fairly enjoyable for a "media center" ... what's your experience?

i have only ever tried it from the live cd , i used it to play dvds, and to watch some of my divx movies. i never ran in to any trouble with it, i have an ati remote wonder which works flawlessly with geexbox aswell

I think Geexbox freakin' rocks. As a matter of fact, it plays video better than Ubuntu. It automatically etected and installed my ATI 9200 PRO tv out capability, at a decent resolution, as to where Ubuntu seems to only be ablr to use Vesa for tv out on this card AND I had to add stuff to xorg to make it work...which sucks because I need a good resolution on my tv with Ubuntu too. :(

GeeXboX is great. Another distro to consider is WOMP!

i wonder if any one can help me, on the computer i have set aside for geexbox, it has a CD/cdrw/dvd combo drive in it, but when i put in any DVD,, be it a movie dvd, or a boot able DVD it will freze the system, even if i am at the bios screen, as soon as i take the dvd out it will unlock, any one have any ideas, or is the drive broken?

I've used it. It didn't look as refined as geeXboX but it still worked and was easy to set up. On my newer laptop, DVD play back was choppy and there was no sound. On my older laptop, however, the play back and the sound were great. In addition, WOMP! has a version with a web browser. All versions include mouse support. Overall, it's worth checking out.

I've had a simular problem before. I believe it's an issue with the drive.

from my live cd, i can access my hard drive to read video files
i heard that there is a way to put a video on the live cd, i think it involves replacing the background.avi file on the cd, but i have
never tested doing that my self
