BIG EDIT
Ok, listen up the DREAM APP IS NOT DEAD!!!

Ok, so it isn't exactally what it was, we have changed it up a bit and generalized it into a platform, which can be customized for a magazine later. Right now we are trying hard to get version 1 out, after which we will start accepting new developers depending on workload. But for now this is a just a notice.

Before anyone starts designing anything please read:
http://fullcirclemagazine.org/fcmapp/

And contact Ttech on IRC as he has begun some work on the above idea...

Ttech on the Ubuntu Forums, has also started work. ;)

That is exactly my idea, hack Media Wiki. Get a nice WYSIWYG editor, (incl uploading) calendar (PHP Cal)

The hardest thing (which is still quite possible):
And then you wanted the email cache and submit monitor and similar.

I could use a bit of help on the email thing as I have not used (as suggested on the Comment on the page) Python or Perl, which would be far better suited for that. (Less memory which is a good thing)

But the rest I can do. ;)

Yesterday I stumbled upon eGroupWare (http://www.egroupware.org/Home) and spent a few hours playing around with it. This software seems to have a good deal of what you are looking for.

Free and open source
Browser based
E-mail (though I haven't tested the functionality)
Administrator, team, groups, etc
Event scheduler
Calendar
And much, much more.

I am extremely new to setting up web-based applications and found this to be very easy to set up and administer. I'm sure one of the pros there would have an even easier time.

hmm, lets see what ronnie thinks about that.

I'm not sure if it has a WYSIWYG editor, but I'm sure it can be hacked, or if it has a post collab thing, but it probbably does. Or some hack can be possibly madel.

Ok, well let me know, I'll work on it. But if you get it then there is no point. Also, let me know if htere is anything that needs to be added. But it should not be hard to add a WYSIWYG editor.

So let me know if you need help / want me to do it or anything else.

Let me know, I'm on the IRC channel. So just message me and I'll see about it. It would be faster then this.

Thanks for that, we'll certainly look in to it :KS

Im putting to geter a mock layout, i chose this layout not for look, though I do think it is a cool design, but for functionality and use of realestate, in the final model I will most likely make it 800px 96% or 90% depending on popular opinion. Pic to come

EDIT: as a sidenote i installed eGroupWare on my server, if you want an FTP tell me. I wont just give these to anyone because, well i want to trust people i give ftp access to, so no offense LINK http://www.cat-blog.org/fcm/group and the username and pass username fcmpass << Please wait a while if it doesnt work as it is uploading, 10 megs WOW

What ever happened to the old collab site?

catfacts

it is still there, this is going to replace it.... When we finish, also we have decided to put up eGroupWare and then develop add-ons for a while, all while working on a from-scratch dream app. The launchpad project is fcmcolab

A few other solutions you could look into are OpenGroupWare.org and O3Spaces.

I couldn't find the page at first, then I found that you spelt collab with one l... I'm pretty sure this is a spelling mistake - Proof readers?

https://launchpad.net/fcmcolab/ <- Links are nice :D

On another note, when you have the project started, I can help development. I don't know enough PHP for everything that the project will need yet though. I have enough knowledge to program a multiple-server IRC Bot in it though :P Gime a bell on IRC or email when you have something I could help with :D (I can't do graphics :P)

What ever happened to the old collab site?

the activeCollab app went closed source but a fork of it did happen while open source but - to be honest - we spent more time having to set up activeCollab for each issue than we did in actually using it! So, it ended up in the idea bin... :)

If anyone wants to help out with this project contact Ttech, he came forward first to do work on this so - as he said above - he is Lead Developer on this.

I just noticed this on Ubuntu's main page

ORLANDO, FL - 21 Jan 2008: LOTUSPHERE -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that it will offer an integrated Open Collaboration Client Solution with support for Ubuntu, a Linux-based operating system from Canonical Ltd. that is especially popular for desktops, laptops and thin clients.

Showing strong momentum around its IBM Lotus Notes 8 and IBM Lotus Symphony-based Open Collaboration Client Solution, IBM also announced a new agreement working with Red Hat targeting small and medium-sized enterprises, and momentum in the Open Collaboration Client Solution powered by SUSE Linux Enterprise from Novell that was announced in August 2007. The announcements were made at the opening of Lotusphere in Orlando.

IBM's Open Collaboration Client Solution is a set of software products designed to help customers in all industries increase collaboration among employees, improve their productivity, and lower the total cost of information technology ownership. It is personal computing software that is based on open standards, providing businesses with a cost-effective and security-rich alternative to Microsoft desktops. Moving away from an entirely proprietary approach to computing to a platform based on open standards gives businesses the freedom to select the proper mix of software for their organization, based on user segmentation, in a heterogeneous environment, helping move them toward the desktops of the future.
...
By combining the innovative user experience of the Ubuntu platform with the re-designed Lotus Notes 8 and Lotus Symphony, customers will experience greater ease-of-use and comprehensive management of the desktop. Full support for Ubuntu within Lotus Notes and Lotus Symphony is planned with Lotus Notes 8.5 in the second half of 2008. The Lotus Symphony office productivity suite is included with Lotus Notes 8 and is available as a separate download, at no additional charge. Ubuntu is released on a regular six-month cycle in more than 50 languages, and is backed with commercial support from Canonical.

"IBM's plans to deliver the IBM Open Collaboration Client Solution with Lotus Notes on the Ubuntu platform is a win for customers everywhere," said Mark Murphy, vice president of alliances, Canonical, the commercial sponsor of Ubuntu. "Canonical is committed to bringing the best available productivity tools to its users on an open platform. Ubuntu users will now have an outstanding choice with Lotus Notes, while businesses will have a great choice with Lotus Domino. From a technical viewpoint, we are impressed how Lotus leverages the Eclipse platform to build and deliver rich client applications. This is an exciting development for Ubuntu users, too."

The Open Collaboration Client Solution includes advanced email and calendar capabilities, proven unified communication and collaboration functionality and lightweight yet powerful word processing, spreadsheet and presentation capabilities with Open Document Format (ODF) support. Because the Open Collaboration Client Solution is built on Lotus Expeditor, which is based on the open source Eclipse Rich Client Platform, business-ready social networking, team collaboration and portal technologies can easily be added to a Linux PC user's desktop.

Is this something you guys are looking for?

Yes and no. We aim to make a web based client that would go full circle ( no pun intended ) in allowing readers to submit articles to us, and us to basically click and make that magazine. Having said this we ( or at least I ) will be checking this out, but our current goal is a web client not desktop.

Can you also provide Drupal or Wordpress integration? Then we'd have an online version as well as a PDF.
