Pointer/Cursor is Posessed

I installed Ubuntu 5.04 on my Inspiron 4000 laptop and everything seems to work except for the mouse-cursor. Occassionally it locks up or 'drifts' over to the right side of the screen and I am unable to move it back to the center with either the touchpad or the keypad-stick. I was wondering if there is a way to fix this or reinstall the cursor drivers, etc? I notice that it somtimes flakes out when Firefox is open or another application window. Any suggestions?
