I am psyched about how much I love ubuntu, and want to try another free os, what do you recommend. It doesn't have to be linux,, but it has to be free

Thats really for you to decide. Personally, I have used fedora 7 and thought it was easier to configure than ubuntu.

Ubuntu uses the GNOME desktop, gOS uses Enlightenment, so if you try a distro with KDE (I recommend Knoppix) you might like it.

Try Linux Mint, I'm running it on my laptop and it's very nice.

I've installed Fedora 8 in a virtual machine tonight to have a play; primarily before I upgrade on of my FC6 machines at work. The PC runs a Wiki as well as plenty of other stuff I rely upon, so I have to know that all will be well post-upgrade. Given the set-up it's more likely to be an upgrade than a re-build though :s I will 'dd' the relevant partitions so that I can go straight back!!!

Below is a Screenshot of gOS (http://http://www.thinkgos.com/index.html) with the "Red Wine (http://www.e17-stuff.org/index.php?xcontentmode=7000&PHPSESSID=d8dba8c75b353d777b05e78c52831c2a)" E17 theme

I would call it elegant and highly configurable, ...not "kiddish" ;)

hmm...looks kinda kiddish. Have you tryed it?Yes it actually is quite nice. Admittedly, I would suggest changing the default theme and set everything up according to how you like it.

Another alternative is keep your Ubuntu install and try different DE/WM's instead of different distros.

Start with trying e17, follow the guide linked in my signature.

Probably the best non-linux OS's that I've tried are:
FreeDOS (http://www.freedos.org/)
Menuet (http://www.menuetos.net/)
Solar OS (http://www.oby.ro/os/os_main.htm)
KolibriOS (http://www.kolibrios.org/)
Minix (http://www.minix3.org/)
Syllable (http://web.syllable.org/pages/index.html)

I don't know why anyone hasn't said it, but what DE's have you tried? A lot of times when new users ask for a new distro they actually just want something that looks different. Try installing enlightenment, KDE, Fluxbox (especially), IceWM, whatever. Simply trying other distros can be... disruptive.

But hey, if you really want a new distro and have the time, dive in! I recommend Fedora.
