That is relatively small as far as bytes go, it is just text. There are other reasons for it, probably a script.

Yup it does definitely make the front page slower when shown...
I just click the minus button and then never ever ever see it again. "Something" just remembers it for me... do you clear your cache/cookies/other on close?

that's been annoying me forever! if I scroll before the page is fully loaded there's no hope left for firefox...

It caused me to resort to a hardware reset!! I really wish they'd remove much of the clutter (other not-needed "eye-candy" features) from these forums.

It's been discussed at some point when gutsy was out and there were a lot more users on the forums.
There is a who's on line (http://ubuntuforums.org/online.php) page, but I do not find it easy to use compared to the front page list.
