Hello again everyone, just back from summer break. How has your summer been? Any good stories to tell? Interesting places visited? New experiences?

I had a great time cycling the Pyrenees. It was a first rate, enjoyable experience that I'll remember a long time. Good times, great company, co-operative weather and superb locales. I feel refreshed and rejuvenated. Nearly two months in the mountains without a computer gives you back a completely different perspective on life. Highly recommended.

The landscapes and vistas were gorgeous, the people were friendly and helpful (thankfully! as we did get lost a couple times) #-o and the little stone-walled villages are simply storybook precious. Pure air, nature, summits - the way it's meant to be really.

Careful on those downward slopes though, it's easy to lose control! I did once and a nasty tree got in my way! ](*,) Nothing broken, (just my pride) some blood - that's why they call me a "weekend warrior" hehe ;-) In fact, we all came out mostly unscathed - twisted ankle, jammed finger was all. The "Pedals de foc" (pedals of fire) mountain race in Catalunya at the end made up for that. It was just the right ending to a wonderful trip.

Now I'm ready to tackle linux afresh, new versions of ubuntu and Gnome coming, new challenges/problems, help those newbies - bring them on!

I do hope everyone has had a fun, safe summer. Anyone else have a summer (or winter for those in the southern hemisphere) experience to share?

Well I took my wife and daughter to the UK, but that was in June/July.
It was the first time my daughter had flown, and the first time some of my family had ever met her. She had a great time, and I really enjoyed sharing her first experiences of flying.
It was the first time I'd been back there since 2002, when I only went for a funeral. this time was all leisure.

Your little one is an absolute darling if I remember correctly xmastree; I think you posted a photo of her using ubuntu a while back, didn't you? The plane must have been quite the event for her, eh? :)

What was your impression of GB now? Any different since '02?

I wish i had some amazing stories to tell but alas i worked during the holidays and college is about to start afresh. In my days off i enjoy trips to the beach with my friends. And lately i have been discovering pool, more that i suck at it but enjoying it nevertheless.

Rock shows (local, no massive festivals for me, thanks), a bit of photography, a bit of tinkering, a lot of work.

lol.. you should just leave your pc downloading while you are in college... instead of leaving the bittorrent open slowing down your internet speed while you browse :P

I don't go and stay in college for X months. I go for two hours a day and come back home. I have brother who use it, so can't do so ;).

I just came back from a trip across Europe with some friends. We started in Geneva, Switzerland, went thru Germany by car (I was the driver, I enjoyed no speed limit on highways  ) and arrived in Amsterdam. We stayed two days there. It was great... Then we went to Belgium, where we tasted belgium beers. We finally arrived in Paris for a music festival (Rock-en-Seine) to see one of my favourite band, the Pixies (it was the third time a saw them). That was a great moment ! After that we came back to Geneva.

We just had three nights in a hotel. The others nights we did camping.

I really enjoyed these vacations. It was a little short (one week), but I'll remember it for a long time !

Now it's time to get back to work..... Damn :?

I went to San Francisco. If you ever go there, be sure to grab a GoCar (www.gocarsf.com)! Also, we took a Segway tour around SF-- I'd definatly recommend it....

With Coakley gone and the Tuna preaching 3-4, come November, you may wish it were mid July all over again.

I think this (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=270635&postcount=24) is my favourete holiday photo. As for her using ubuntu, did you see this one (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=294570&postcount=9)? :)

The plane must have been quite the event for her, eh? :)Definately. we had been buildinng up to it, and she was really excited. Once the plane started its take off run her eyes became wider as it got faster.
Daddy! Daddy!! Daddy!!! WOW, we're flying daddy!

What was your impression of GB now? Any different since '02?Yeah, the two towns I've lived have both changed dramatially. Burnley, an old town, has gone much more up market now. Although I was advised that it's not a good idea to go out in the evening... :| Too many drunken kids looking for trouble.
Driving through in the evening I could see armoured police cars. It wasn't like that in my day. (pre-'85).
Kids today, no respect. Blah, blah, blah.

Ah yes, the fringe festival. I used to live in Livingston, so it was within esay reach for me.

My sister used to stay with me for the duration. Brought her Amiga with a program to automatically work out her timetable. Already loaded up, but editable if she saw something she liked. The only time i saw her was when I got up to go to work, she'd be asleep on the sofa, or if we saw a show together.

oops.

Tuna = Bill Parcells, the coach of the Dallas Cowboys football team.
Coakley = inside linebacker.
...and 3-4 = the antithesis to the 85-86 Chicago Bears defense. The. Best. Ever...

I slipped that prior post in there for my Texas buddies to chew on...

Linebacker? Football? Oh, you mean American football. That strange game where two lines of men run into each other and fall over while one guy runs backwards with a ball. But nobody cares anyway so they have to employ dancing girls to make people watch it :)
What's all that about, eh?

Real football is played with the feet, hence the name. ;-)

And there's no 's' in defence dammit!

Actually football came from scotland and was more like rugby where the 'goal' is the next village and the 'ball' was a sheep or pigs stomach (whichever was more readily avalible) the aim was to get the ball to the next village with as little killing as possible, obviously UEFA had to get involved at that point...

August 30th, 2005, 04:38 AM
Actually it's much older than that - going back to Roman times, whence Calcio Fiorentino, and even (stretching the "football" definition a bit) back to the Han Dynasty in China, 2nd century BC.

I've spent most of my summer studying, I had a break of only 20 days after an exam and I have another exam on the 5th of September.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that my motherboard (of my brand new computer) passed away and I had to send it to Compaq. And it's not back yet.

Aside from that, built a front step and back deck on my house, some lawn matainence, started rehearsing for an upcoming childrens play I am touring Nova Scotia with, oh yeah, and took my first steps into Linux with Ubuntu.

Well anyway...
I was chilling all through this summer :) Finished school and I have now still 1 month to wait until I have to start civil service ( in germany this is the only alternative, if you don't want to go to the miltary for 9 month... unless you count cheating your way around both :D )
Training a lot aikido lately and playing a lot with ubuntu and now kubuntu :)

Highpoint was the artic foxes playing a few metres from the tent at breakfast. No mobile network, no email, no voicemail, no IMs........ total reset!
