Seriously, I thought the Ubuntu community was all about helping. I have made a topic which I have bumped numerous times getting zero responses. I never have had this problem before. But I made this topic yesterday and have only received one post on it. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=606366&highlight=Chinook

Posts get sent to the bottom of the line pretty fast. I highly doubt someone that has the know-how would of just past your thread by.

Just my two cents.

I just don't like bumping it 10 times before a response. It sucks.

I understand completely, I have asked for help about the same topic, when one gives me help to a certain question and I ask another question on the same topic, they either dont answer or give me info they already told me.

If you are not getting an immediate response, best be patient.

We have an "unanswered" team, but they have no way to identify your posts if you bump them.

Many, many of the experienced users here use the "ubuntu tool bar"

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2302

Second item on that menu is

"Unanswered posts"

You previous post will now never show up on searches, because you have bumped it so it is no longer "unanswered".

also bumping you own posts is considered rude and as such you are less likely to get a response.

Having an attitude like that is going to get you nowhere, in fact it's going to make people less inclined to help you. These forum threads are answered by people that are willing to help in their free time. When someone knows the answer to your question they will reply. Just wait and the help will come, we understand you get frustrated and want your problem solved but so do hundreds of others.

Don't forget people actually need to be able to help before they respond..
I for one simply don't know how to help you fix your particular problem, and even though I may read your post.. I will not respond.

You can bump a couple times per 24 hours. There is also an unanswered posts team. Once you bump, the threads do not show up in the unanswered posts. We also search for "bump".
And sometimes, no one knows the answer.

Please remember every member volunteers on their free time.

Looking at your previous thread you actually bumped the thread 4 times within the same hour, which can itself can put people off answering i think.

It`s kinda like your demanding a response immediately in forum etiquette.
A bit like block capitals is perceived as shouting ...and often ignored mabey???
There are a dedicated group of people out there who will happily help but we`ve all had threads that nobodys answered so you really should`nt take it to heart too much:)

Try just leaving a thread for at least 24 hours before bumping it mabey. The other side of the world has yet to see your threads/posts remember:)

i know where your frustration is, but people can't answer your question unless they know the answer. So you have to be patient and wait until someone who knows the answer sees your post. People aren't not answer your post out of laziness, it's probably that they don't know how to help you. They aren't ignoring you just to spite you. Be patient, this is a free service.

My opinion: I generally donīt answer bumped posts as I consider bumping to be mildly rude. I will search for unanswered posts in order to help.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but getting "help" on a forum is a 2-way street. The "search" link is up there for a reason.

*As far as forums go: This by far is the best forum for any distro I've used down thru the years. The community does their best to help the new people out, not to mention show great patience. Try and post some of the "noob" questions that I see on this forum, on another distro's "Beginner" section and see some of the responses.

Well, at least for me, most of my threads haven't gotten any sort of useful answer at all. I'm gradually figuring stuff out for myself, which is no doubt useful, but it means I'm also pretty much lost on anything that I can't just figure out through fiddling. Most of the documentation is frankly rather poorly written as well; I'd like to help contribute to it eventually, once I figure out what I'm doing, but in the meantime it's a bit dispiriting. I'm a pretty smart guy; it's frustrating that there's so little decent documentation to help figure things out on my own, as I generally do things, and more frustrating that these forums haven't been much help either. It's made me a lot more reluctant to ask any new questions - I mean, **** it, what's the point?

Crappy documentation isn't just limited to Ubuntu, either - I'm starting to think it's symptomatic of free software in general. It's amazing how little effort has been put into documenting most of the software I'm trying to use here - I'm not surprised a lot of people would rather write code than write documentation but at a certain point, isn't it a no-brainer that if anyone has any hope of using their software, they're going to at least need some advice beyond "here's the sources and here's a link to a package"? I hate to give into stereotyping but from my vantage as not particularly a computer nerd, it really does seem like the popular notion of computer nerds who are just completely unable to interact normally with people has some validity, at least judging by the sometimes astonishingly poor job they do at trying to explain how to use software.

Not only should you not beg for help, but you shouldn't bump a thread more than once every day.
