I haven't tried installing a full desktop Ubuntu on anything with less than 64MB of RAM. Are you planning on using this PC as a desktop workstation or as something else (like a server or whatever)?

I think officially the minimal requirements for Ubuntu include at least 64 MB of RAM. There's a mini-RAM howto:

You could also try Damn Small Linux.

The minimum requirement for Ubuntu is 32MB.

The minimum requirement for Ubuntu is 32MB. Thanks for the correction. I didn't have my CDs in front of me. In any case, 16 MB is going to be a struggle.

I wasn't trying to correct you, we posted the same minute. :)
I run Ubuntu on two computers. One has 256MB and that really isn't enough if I want to run several applications at once. It's always at close to 100% RAM usage and and starts swapping whenever I do something. The other has 512MB which has been much smoother. I can't imagine how a default installation of Ubuntu could function on as little as 32MB but that's what it says on the CD.

Damn Small Linux (http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/) claims to "Run light enough to power a 486DX with 16MB of Ram." Maybe give that a shot.
