I live in a dorm, but at my house I have an old PC that currently runs a server gui-less install. I'm going home this weekend and Thanksgiving weekend and I'd like to use it for school work so I don't have to lug my desktop back home. I've installed Xubuntu on it before but it was a little slower than I'd like, so I thought about installing Fluxbuntu on it when I go home this weekend.

I know Fluxbuntu is an RC release and not a final, but how useable is it? I need to do word processing (Abiword?) and Java programming (I'd like to use JDK 1.6). Of course, I'd also like to have internet access and browsing and IM as well.

Does Fluxbuntu seem like it will be able to take care of the job? Apt-get works on fluxbuntu, right? I've never used Fluxbox so I'm going to have to famiiarize myself with it a little if I do install it.

The machines specs:

P3 450mhz
384MB ram
Radeon 7000 video card

In the meantime, why don't you do this:

using fluxbuntu rc since the day it was released... and this far it is solid... there are some known bugs and issues... like ivman not automounting usb drives... (which is easily fixed by doing "mkdir .ivman" in home dir)

other then that, it is ubuntu server + fluxbox + some fluxbuntu packages... everything that workes in ubuntu will work in fluxbuntu... and it uses the standard ubuntu gutsy repositories, so yes, APT will work fine

have fun! :)

no issues in virtualbox yet! It's very usable for me. It runs on 96MB of RAM in virtualbox

It is the only OS currently running on my 4 year old laptop (also for school use) and it is very solid/fast for me. I'd recommend it.
