The absolute beginners forum is very, very active. Posts move down way too fast.

Perhaps sub-forums would help? e.g.

- Live CD
- Install
- Video controller
- Drives (mount, clean, etc.)
- Basic Linux concepts (file system, commands, etc.)
- Dual boot problems

... like that.

Ideally posts in the beginner area should be moved at some point to the categories here http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=173 which are pretty much what you describe. So in short no we plan to not add sub forums there since they exist in the Main support category.

Unfortunately, moving threads at some point does not address the issue. The issue is not the large number of old threads, but the highly active and large number of new / active threads.

From what I've read so far in that forum, most of the threads are correctly placed when they are started (that is, the author is a complete beginner asking pretty basic questions).

However, threads less than 3 hours old are already on page 6 of the forum. Threads moving down that fast don't get the attention of the regulars who can actually help, and are hard for the thread author to find to see if any response has been posted.

Just a request... do as you wish with it.

The Absolute Beginners forum is for well... absolute beginners.

They have a problem, they want a solution fast! They don't want to waste any time choosing a category from the plethora on the main page and so post their question immediately in the first most striking subforum they see... that's why its on its own and yellow hilighted etc.

Hopefully their problem is simple and gets answered quickly by the amazing group of volunteers here.

Only when a user gets used to this environment, and in turn comes up with more specific questions do they start to think more about how they ask this question, taking time to look on the front page and pick the correct category.

I think subforums in absolute beginners would be detrimental, creating a divide between them, and the standard ones on the front page.
