was bored and tried both. dont waste your time with debian live. it was probably the worst live cd ive ever tried. half the apps wouldnt launch. the icons in the menus are only half there. visual artifacts everywhere. a complete mess.
Vixta,(based on fedora) on the other hand, was actually a decent live cd. i could do without the windows feel, but at least everything worked pretty good. until you want codecs. then a window pops up asking you for money. the only free codec offered was fluendo mp3. see ya.
nothing exciting to see here. move along.

It really annoys me when people bitch about BETA software. kde4 is nowhere near completion.

i wasnt bitching. i was merely stating my experiences with it. if you cant handle it, dont respond. you sir, are the one "bitching". way to go mips. no go and see how many other threads you can ruin.

You probably should have clarified that your grievances towards Debian Live were only for the KDE 4 version. I've used Live Helper many times and have had no problems with it.

And, may I ask, what it's wrong with Fluendo MP3 codec?
If the Debian KDE 4 Live CD worked so bad, it isn't KDE 4 fault, it's packagers fault, KDE 4 is already usable, aside from Plasma, which is quite unstable and have big rough edges (this ain't for you, because in any time you bashed KDE 4)

i didnt say anything was wrong with the fluendo codec. only that it was the only free codec available on vixta.
i wasnt bashing KDE4. only that the "distro" as a whole was sub par. and yes, i know it is only a beta. don't take my experiences so personal.

if you notice the title, it says "tried debian live KDE4". why would i need to clarify?

The other codecs are available for free, same as ubuntu. Go to Livna.org for info on how to add this stuff. Fedora, being based in the US, will not officially point to sources for codecs that are illegal in the US. However, they are available through sources like livna and freshrpms.
EDIT: The reviews as a whole were fair. I was actually going to try that KDE4 cd, but with this news I will wait. Thanks.

Sorry I misunderstood your sentence:
Tthe only free codec offered was fluendo mp3. see ya.
The "see ya" made me thought you was upset because it only offer that option, which, is by the way, the best option, as is 100% legal.

I clarified that I didn't think you were bashing KDE 4.

I got the Open Suse based KDE4 Beta 4 LiveCD and it was fine, worked perfectly, and I finally got to try new Amarok, though only with OGG files. No KOffice though.
I'd reccomend trying it, it seemed fairly responsive for a LiveCD so hopefully i won't be much slower than KDE3.5. I've heard it said that it'll be faster, and I hope it will, but I assume with a couple of Plasmoids running it'd eat up that extra couple of percent

your welcome. that's why i wrote about it, to save someone the trouble of downloading it. unless you're a beta tester type person. (or masochist)
i did think KDE4 looked good though. cant wait to try out the final version.

I have tried vixta before out of curiousity and it might of just been my computer, but it was slower than vista on a 256mb machine if thats even possible, so my experience with vixta was horrible, from my experience if there was only vixta and vista, i'd recommend vista... and i'm not a fan of vista, nor am i of fedora, and fedora based distros, i might give fedora 8 a try.. its been a while since i tested fedora, things have changed for me since then
One other thing, i've downloaded debian kde version, and i couldnt get it to install... is it me or what? i cant never get a debian to work, only one i've had luck with is debian xfce which didnt impress me alot

Welll it's meant to mimic Windows Vista, so it's obviously going to have to ask you to fork over money for what most people would consider basic functionality

I suppose you're right. It seemed to me that you had problems with Debian Live in general. My mistake.

its not hard to get free codecs in fedora. you just add the livna repositories. i actually thought fedora was pretty good, and will probably check out the next release. 2008 is gonna be a good year for distros.
