Quite a many forum softwares allow you to enter data for various instant messaging systems in your profile, as does this forum. Unfortunatly, quite a many forum softwares ignore jabber, which is a pity.

Not only is jabber cool but it could also be used for really cool instant post notification.

Sure, this could be made possible with other IM systems, too. However, jabber makes it really easy, as jabber accounts also work as email accounts and most jabber servers accept external email addressed to their subscribers. As most forum softwares already support notification, it should only require small changes to get the notification email sent to an alternative email address. If that email address happens to be a jabber account, you will have achieved nearly instantaneous post notification.

As a related example, I am using the email notification feature in smartmontools (http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/) to get me informed as quickly as possible in case something goes wrong with my hard disks.

Wholesomely agreed. Concerning the instant notification - that seems to me quite a onerous task, no...? :-)

Cheers,

For the moment, why not use mail-notification (http://www.nongnu.org/mailnotify/) on your email account. It's a very nice program, fits in with gnome perfectly, and the new version's just been made.
