It's been in Beta for longer than three full releases of Ubuntu, but Freeciv (www.freeciv.org) 2.1 it is finally stable :)

There are a lot of improvements in this release, including quite a bit of sound and a huge visual refresh. The default tile theme is now very sharp and pretty, city names appear in a darkened box. There is a dependencies tree for the Science stuff, and while it is not the prettiest thing ever, it works well.
It no longer feels like using GTK for the game's user interface is a bad thing, as it now has a cool skin. I didn't know that was possible! Makes me like GTK even more than I already did; this thing looks surprisingly good, and has the bonus of being very accessible.

Thanks for enjoying our new release Mr. Picklesworth. We in the Freeciv community worked really hard last month to finally get this out the door!
Now let's look forward to Freeciv 2.2! :KS

Definitely a fun game, although the I feel like the UI could be made more user-friendly. I do play the game though with enjoyment :)

Crappy UI is a known bug. ;)
Tried to dive into the gtk code myself last year, but got confused and gave up. The sdl interface is markedly 'cooler' but still sadly incomplete and inadequate - especially for online games.
Any skilled GUI programmer/designed out there who reads this: you'd be warmly welcomed if you dropped by the freeciv-dev mailing list and gave your support. :)

Hehe, tnx. That's one of the things I've been pushing for. ;)
BTW, there's a new bugfix version out now: 2.1.1. It fixes a bunch of crashes and other issues. See http://freeciv.wikia.com/wiki/NEWS-2.1.1

It is, but only in Hardy - see http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/games/
You just have to convince the package maintainers to backport it to Gutsy. Maybe they will, after another few Freeciv maintenance releases...

The graphics are looking great! To be honest, my biggest setback with FreeCiv was that it looked more than outdated, (this is just my opinion, and only so because my favorite game of all time is Civilization 3). With it looking this good though, maybe now I wont have to reboot for C3
