as much as i like Unreal and Half Life (especially in [cheat] god-mode!!!), i would LOVE to find some adventure games for linux. something along the lines of the myst series or syberia. what's available, and how do i find it and install it? monkey island was fun, but a bit too kiddie for me.
i know VERY little about the inner workings of linux, so stuff that i can do using synaptic or a short tutorial would be ideal for starting.

oh, i should have probably mentioned - i'm looking for no-cost games. i went on wikipedia and found a fairly good list of quake-type games, but the short list of rpg's and adventure games has lots of multiplayer-online stuff, which i'm not interested in.
are there other resources out there that might list some stuff?

One good source of low-cost RPG/Adventure games is console emulation, bluepowder7. There are a number of excellent emulators around for the various Sega and Nintendo emulators (sadly, no Master System one for Linux! :(), and the Sony Playstation. There's also PCXS2 for the Playstation 2, but you'll need a fairly high-end machine to get good results from that, really. I'd recommend:
NES: FCE Ultra (in the repositories)
SNES: ZSNES (also in the repositories; Gutsy has the current version)
N64: Mupen64 (http://mupen64.emulation64.com/)
Genesis/Megadrive/32X/SegaCD: GENS (http://gens.consolemul.com/index.shtml), but find debs here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=290008&highlight=gens)
Playstation: pSX Emulator (http://psxemulator.gazaxian.com/)
and PCSX2 (http://www.pcsx2.net/) for Playstation 2.
As well as games, you'll need BIOSs for some GENS games, pSX and PCSX2. Easily found but not discussable here.

Penumbra (http://penumbra-overture.com/) has a free demo, and is very similiar to Myst (although it has some fighting in it).

The Longest Journey (a little more story with a little less puzzle but still good), Dreamfall (sequel to the longest journey) and Darkfall (a little easier then myst I found) All of the above can probably be found on a torrent site.
