View Full Version : Another Linux Flavor

I have Gutsy just about perfect (for me), so now I'm bored. Can any one suggest another flavor that I could play around with? Something that's amenable to eye candy and such. I would prefer NOT fooling with anything that requires a ton of compiling.
Any ideas? Got 25 gigs partitioned out with nothing on it...
Thanks!

Basically all distros are "amenable to eye candy". You can install whatever docks, DE's, or WM's you want, so that is the same across the board.
If you like bling, try the liveCD's of elive, dreamlinux, or Sabayon. The first two are debian based, the latter, a binary install based on gentoo.

openSUSE ?
Actually, that's why I have an open partition. I thought it was pretty boring and very much reminded me of Microshaft. When I started to look for codecs, it directed me to sites that you have to pay to download codecs!
Thanks, though! Any one else?

If you didn't like Open Suse you probably won't like Fedora either, so steer clear of that one. :) Here is a cool little test that you can check out:

And of course you can always check out www.distrowatch.com :) Gentoo, is fun, and a great learning experience. Not for the quick fly by though.

GASP! The makers of proprietary codecs want to get paid in accordance with the license! What is the world coming to? If you don't want to pay for codecs, you should use open source formats like flac and ogg.
I would recommend Fedora for a distro to play around with. Plenty of room to learn stuff, all the latest applications, and lots of eye candy available. Here's my Fedora 7 screenie:

Holy cow! How very cool! I downloaded and installed elive and am running e-17. I am a little "swamped" with it right now, but it is SO COOL! A hearty and heavy THANKS to you!

PS: Think I'll have a few days worth of work just tweaking up the desktop!:-D

Well, after 20 years of buying their proprietary treasures OVER & OVER, yes - I rather cringe at the idea of being led straight to a shopping cart. Especially when it's to the God-awful tune of $0.17... Wouldn't want to force them in to bankruptcy or anything like that.
Why is it that every few replies I get around here I'm left feeling like a 10 y/o being lectured by mean old Uncle George?

Hey, it shouldn't be the amount that matters, only the principle, or the act, son. :)

Second that.
I use Sabayon on one of my boxes and it is great.
Besides you want to play, don't you? So move from debian to gentoo, it's like visiting another, friendly but strange, country.

I tried to get dreamlinux, but the servers were extremely slow, so I'll save that for another time. I was looking at sabayon tonight, too. I'll probably give it a shot. Need to make up another partition, first! :lolflag:
I'm kind of disappointed in myself for not giving Linux a try before this year. I feel like I wasted a lot of time with MS stuff. I've found that I really don't need MS stuff at all, once I got used to Linux. And now there's so many different flavors and configs to do!

I recommend Antix Lysistrata . As long as you don't try to login with root, the default configuration is nice. The older version was nice too and has some advantages over the newer version.

I would suggest Fedora. It's my second favorite and it's next major release comes out tomorrow.
Here's a tip though; you can get Fedora 8 now. It's Fedora 8 RC3. The only difference between the two is the repositories. That's no problem though because RC3 will use the official repositories on the release day (tomorrow).
This will save you from the hell of downloading it on release day!
...Random smilie.

Yes, I think I have decided what I'm sticking with, for now. I am sticking with Gutsy and desktop effects. Screen shots are below of my current config/view.Desktop shot and cube shot.
I also am triple booting with Vista (yuck! <for wifey>) and ELive (E-17). I'll post some shots of ti later.
Thanks for the suggestions! I tried out some really cool stuff. I have 11 CDs/DVDs to play around with and share. Sure tested my wits making triple-boots over and over! LOL
Thanks again!

If you go with Fedora 8 make sure you edit your fstab and include noatime under options, that will speed it up a lot. At least it did in 7, I assume that 8 would be the same.

Microshaft?
Anyway, OpenSUSE codecs can be found with a one click install on this page.

DreamLinux is a good looking distro, with some functional effects. Not that a giant rotating cube and wobbly windows aren't functinal...
