For those who are into space Sims X3 is up there with elite (if you remember back that far) it has just gone to beta. I have found no release date yet.

The Home site for X3 has a very active forum and I'm sure you will get some idea of just how much content there is in this game.
See http://www.egosoft.com

The game has a fairly basic plot which you may follow when ever you want to pick it up. Following the plot will give you an introduction to the basic game play and you will pick up rewards on the way. When you complete the plot you have only just started the game in fact many X fans never play the plot.

You start life in The Xuniverse with next to nothing and have to build your reputation through out the universe with other races this can be achieved through Trading commodities between races. The alternative is to fight your way to the top! You can join the pirates and earn money from your booty at the expense of reputation with all around you. What ever route you take you will need to think your way through Tactical combat, Facility placement, Ship and equipment purchased all sets you apart from the rest.

The main point to the X series of games is an open-ended story you control what you do and when you do it. You can build up a huge trading empire or military force. You can even be a taxi driver or a bounty hunter if you look up BBS missions you can earn lots of credits.

If you want to find out more visit the egosoft forum.

If your sitting there looking for a new gaming experience and don't know what Elite style game play was all about strap yourself into your starting Argon Buster and have the ride of your life! Be warned this game has a really steep learning curve so if you give up easy it wont be for you. If you get into it you wont be playing anything else for a while!

X3 is a commercial game. That said I have always had good value for money from the X series on Windows and its good to see current game producers taking Linux seriously.

X3 is a good game, but I wonder why LGP takes a lot of time to port their games to Linux.

When you look at the port of X3 to MAC (done by RuneSoft), it took only 5 to 6 months. And their games are not bug-free ! I think the main problem of LGP is to rely on independant subcontractors to port the games, when RuneSoft has its own employees to do the job.

I will give it a try though.

Hi duglambier,

I think they are trying to get it as bug free as possible for Linux. I guess they don't want to make a total hash of the release for obvious reasons. The first X3 release on Windows was a nightmare I was one of the sufferers on launch day! X3 really pushes the limits of a windows PC.Egosoft have a great attitude towards there product and they sort stuff out quickly in my experience. They have released new content for the game regularly and I believe there is some new Windows content on its way soon.

Egosoft listen to comments on the forum and the modders are always tweaking stuff and adding new content so its a long term commitment from them. The biggest problem they have is getting new people into it as its content is so vast its hard for new players with no experience to get the hang of it!

It will be interesting to see how Linux machines cope with X3 or how X3 copes with Linux for that matter.

I've given up on LGP's Beta programs...

I've signed up for nearly everything they've had and I've never been selected, I'm not about to pre-order just to get into the beta...
