Hello there folks.
Well I've been trying to use Linux on and off for a while now, but the rebooting to XP to play games always gets me

I've tried getting WoW and Guild Wars to run but so far with no success I have 1900XT card and drivers that came with Ubuntu 7.10 ( I had to enable them IIRC ). Compiz is working ok I guess (don't have anything to compare it with) and the card should be enough to play at least some games.

So what games (except for the Linux native ones Quakes, Dooms and NWN afaik) did you guys get running on ATi cards? I'll use Cedega if needed no problem.

I understand Linux is not a gaming platform but I would only like to get a quick gaming fix here and there :)

Thank you for your time!

Portal is playable in Wine 0.9.42 with the 8.41.7 fglrx driver (but not with the 8.42.3, which causes crashes on all versions of Wine, for me).

Well, it appears that Linux is much more of a gaming platform with Wine if you have an nVidia card... >.>

Yeah I understand that :( Sadly I went for the ATi card so I'll just have to make best out of it, try to make best of it :)

I'm going to guess it's an R600 card - they seem to get the best out of 8.42.3, and are certainly afflicted with less of the stability issues under Wine. I'm also going to guess he's running a 32bit Ubuntu, not a 64bit one, as the 64bit ATI driver is much less reliable.

Back a year or two ago when I used Suse, I noticed that wine apps encountered much more bugs on 64-bit linux in general.

A big problem for some games

Guild Wars
Neverwinter Nights 2
Homeworld 2

is the fact that after 0.9.45 some big changes to the dx drivers in Wine uses a Z value that works great on nVIDIA but not on ATi, ATi renders invisable models and textures with games using this specific value.
Not clear if all ATi cards are affected but many are.

As for the 8.42.3 drivers they do boost preformance but are somewhat unstable overall on some cards and seems to have some small problems with later kernels
