Hi
In addition to the the option of marking the threads as 'SOLVED' , I feel there should be another option as well: 'PARTIALLY SOLVED'.
This option is for those whose threads have been temporarily solved by a workaround method or something but is still awaiting final (or better) solution.
Personally I've felt this need on a couple of my threads where I was able to manage to make things work but not the 'true' way.So I feel it would be easier to those who take a look at others threads either for reading 'Solved' entries or trying to answer 'Unsolved' questions.

That wouldn't really help people who are browsing.
Either a problem is solved, or it isn't. If there is a temporary solution, it is unsolved.

For example if there is a shutting down problem or a power management issue and someone has been able to find a temporary workaround (but not quite actually resolved it) , then in that case it would be helpful for others to use this workaround until a final solution is provided.

Yes, I agree, but actually marking it as such wouldn't be that helpful. If there is a thread on getting this ("http://www.x-tremegeek.com/templates/SearchDetail.asp?productID=13430) to work in Gutsy, and it is not marked as sovled, I would still read it if I were to get that hardware. Actually, I am getting it, and have started a thread in the Cafe on it. I also did look at similar posts, and gathered information there. Marking it as "Partially Solved", wouldn't have helped me.

It helps the people who are browsing.
People who want to click on the thread in order to help then know that the user doesn't have the problem any more.
The people who search for the thread later and see a bunch of partially solved threads in the search results know that there may be a way to deal with the problem but that it's just a workaround.

In my experience, any thread with a few answers, and not marked solved, usually has some helpful advice, possible a work around.
Few people take the time to mark a thread as solved, and assigning degrees of solution would make it more difficult, but that is only my opinion.

Yes, people do search through unsolved threads (which make up a major chunk of threads here) but I think it would become a lot systematic if we could categorize threads this way and if people have the option to do it they'll learn it.
Not to forget the rabit-like multiplication of threads , and the need to organization will arrive soon.
One more aspect, when one searches for threads , we seldom do go beyond a couple of pages , making 'archived' threads practically invisible.
This idea may be completely redundant or it might be help in better searches (and reduce multiple postings) but is there any harm in trying it out? maybe , say, for few months to see how it goes.
Of course I don't know the details and complications which may be required to achieve this, but that's just my perspective :)

Maybe it would work, but labelling it "[WORKAROUND]" would be shorter and more descriptive.
