Today, OpenSuSE finally released a Live CD for 10.3. Only 32 bit versions, but better than nothing:

Gnome:

KDE:

Going to take a look at the distro now.

Burning the ISOs right now :D

Is there any faster link or a torrent? It will take 7-8 hours with this speed.

It downloaded at full speed for me. I believe these are the only links right now, though I understand they will implement the Live CDs in the menu at http://software.opensuse.org in the next few days, in which case there will also be a torrent (I prefer torrents as well).

I downloaded the ISOs from the distrowatch links... came down with an average of 1,5 MB/s...

I'm glad downloads work so well on campus cause I don't miss torrent downloads (which I don't have acces to due to school's policy).

Can you install from the live disc, or is it just a preview?

Didn't try installing yet... I have a perfectly working installation (and that's rare for me at the level of experimentation I put it through) and I have 0 space left on my harddisk (another great thing about linux - it works under this harsh conditions). But I'll see if the installer starts at least.

The installer works fine, it's just like the Ubuntu installer only it's SuSE style.

I only performed a Gnome install on a friends computer, but the KDE install program seems to work to... it launches and that's all I can say about it.

For some reason, the Live CD was incredibly slow on my system. It took literally minutes for Firefox to start. Perhaps my CD got damaged, not sure. It's not the hardware, other Live CDs run fast.

Hmmm... am glad there is finally a LiveCD of OpenSuse. My friend wants to try linux and I wanted to pick 2 EASY distros for him that may support different hardware.

1. Linux Mint
and now
2. OpenSuse 10.3

Between these two he should be set.:guitar:

You might also want to look at Sabayon Linux for him. :) They have a finely crafted Live CD that includes binary drivers, 3D desktop, etc. It is a good introduction to Linux because it comes with the stuff you normally have to install manually before you can use it. So it gives a more complete impression of what a properly set up Linux system may look like.

Yeah, I ran Sabayon on and off since v3.3. I just haven't been happy with their
quality lately. I think they just need a better beta program or something.
I think their best release was 3.3.

No way, I found 3.3 to be crap. 3.1 was my fav, but 3.2 wasn't bad either. I gave up after 3.3, and 3.4 wasn't any better.

Back to Suse, I have not tried the liveCD yet, but I am glad they finally did this. I can't think of a single popular distro without one now (unless you want to call slackware popular, and don't count SLAX as a slackware liveCD)

I am typing this from the live KDE CD, and I am VERY impressed. It runs very well on my system. The apps open very fast for a live CD, and it actually quite a usable system. Great jobs openSUSE devs and... well... it's about time.

Running the KDE Live CD again. This time I hacked the sound to work. The problem is my sound card is not detected, first I have to configure it in YaST. I expected that to be enough, because the test sound in YaST works. However the sound didn't work anywhere else, then after googling about I found out that I also have to add the user to the audio group. Slightly complicated.

I presume the normal install CD has more packages than the live CD? If I decide to install maybe I should use the normal CD. I'm not sure why I have downloaded and burned both :)
