e17 is the default WM for gOS, I find e17 more user friendly and feature rich then OS X

Im glad you have enough bandwidth to declare 700mb downloads "A thing of the past". Many of us would strongly disagree however.

how is gOS different from just a simple install of E17 over Ubuntu 7.10?

I'm not sure of all the differences, but the basic idea seems to be that it focuses on web apps (google stuff mainly). The interface has been simplified so that people unfamiliar with Linux (or e17) can just "point and click" to go directly to gmail, googleapps, youtube etc.
Under the hood, its pretty much Gutsy and there are a fair number of the default ubuntu packages installed by default (which could, IMO, be lightened considerably to bring the iso to under 700Mb). Enlightenment has been fully integrated as the default desktop (the implementation already has its detractors who say that should not be done with something under such active development).
I'm sure that experienced Ubuntu users would be just as happy (or happier) installing e17 over Gutsy, but gOS isn't aimed at us. Its there as a desktop for the Walmart sub $200 machines and anything similar.
If the hits on RAV TUX's gOS forum are anything to go by, we are in for a flood of Linux newbies. And that's a Good Thing, IMO.:)

There is an article in the NYTimes about gOs on Walmart Everex computers for $200.
There is a gOS website with a screen shot of the desktop. It has a dock from
Enlightment and it's based on Ubuntu.
http://thinkgos.com/index.html
I read a report that there will be an Everex laptop running gOS for $300 soon.
See a trend? First Dell sells Linux computers, now Walmart.
Very cool.

Yes, gOS is a complete enlightenment desktop based on Gutsy. I think what has confused a lot of people is the plain-ness of the default desktop - no Enlightenment bling! It is included if you want it, but I think the devs were trying to not scare the horses. :-)
Here's a gOS desktop with a little more e-bling

Description
An alternative operating system for the masses
Our idea is to be a simple, user friendly, beautiful desktop for normal people.
Out of the box, just works!
We're creating an OS ecosystem that is complete. We come with all the software you need to browse the web, email, instant message... play movies, music, and connect to iPods... create and edit documents, spreadsheets, presentations, databases, images... out of the box. Plug and play!
Bring on Google and other wonderful applications
We recommend Google for just about everything... Gmail, Gtalk, Calendar, Maps, Docs and Spreadsheets, and more. We'd like to welcome you to the idea that Google already is your "operating system."
Open source and other values
We thank the Ubuntu 7.10 community and Enlightenment community for their contribution to gOS and the world. Our dedicated team and passionate community of volunteers are commited to bringing our alternative OS to the masses... so people everywhere can enjoy a third, more affordable and attractive choice when shopping for a computer. It looks like an interesting project. I am wondering if they are making use of the fact that it's made for a specific kind of pc to recompile some of the central elements like the kernel, libc, e17 optimised for the hardware. That's an edge Apple can give to its users, and with a deal like this, I'd be nice to see Linux taking advantage of the same.

Very nice bling Aubrey....
For others interested in the CD version of gOS, keep an eye on Linuxtracker for the gOS CD torrent, it is 698.4 MB it should be released within the next couple of days, if not sooner.

The Taiwanese asus eee pc 701 runs also on an even slicker desktop, in my opinion. It's based on Linux of course.
There is a choice between the "easy" desktop and a more familiar type of desktop.
Older people and children who have no pre-conceived notions of where menus should be, how they should look, where icons should be and whether they should bounce, etc. will like these desktops.

Tabs along the top of the monitor make it super easy to navigate. Kinda like my Firefox, or the Apple website, etc.
Some Chinese very inexpensive computers running Linux also will have this kind of system.

Isn't there already an official forum up hosted by RAV TUX? Why would there need to be an unofficial one?

I've used it and think it's a piece of junk. Very basic Enlightenment distro. It seems like they spent much more time marketing the PCs than they did creating the operating system.
