Hi,

Fairly new to Ubuntu. Have only just discovered the Extras and Backports repositories. Added them and updated package information, then thought what the Hell and hit upgrade all and commit changes in Kynaptic.

Downloaded everything okay, but CPU is maxed out now and has been going for about an hour and a half so far.

Semperon 2.4GHz, 512MB RAM. Is this normal? Should I leave it and come back in the morning, or what? Kynaptic hasn't even got to displaying the Building Dependencies message yet.

Anyone got comparable experiences?

Thanks,

Well..

Number 1 : Ditch kynaptic, and install Synaptic.. Ok, no KDE icons, but you get some more performance and functionality..

Number 2 : It could be that a program being updated wants your input at a terminal (this happens while updating), in which case it halts everything. If I were you, I'd cancel everything, and install Synaptic straight away...

By implication then, yes - my install time is way out of line.

Alright, thanks for your help so far - I'm happy to give Synaptic a try. I'll just install it via Kynaptic and... uh oh. ;)

So the next logical question is what happens if I just kill Kynaptic while it's all tied up? I'm a little worried about doing that if it's just downloaded the new packages and is installing them. Is there a risk it will it plunge me into Dependancy Hell?

I don't mind leaving it running all night if there's a good chance that it will sort itself out in the end. Is there a way of checking if any particular package is waiting for input as you suggest? Would starting aptitude at this point be a really really bad idea?

Thanks again,

-H.
