Conclusion: Mandriva did the job really very good and cleverly by providing plethora of tools and eye candy softwares. One of the great OS out there with gr8 interface and nice over all performance .. but still Mandriva One 08 did not have much to brag about and if want full from Mandriva you must be looking for the Power pack edition which is a pad version and paying for it did not make sense when great and much better distros out there for free…
To sum it all Mandriva is a must try desktop for newbie. But still mandriva lags when compared to latest and stable distros out there. Though the system was stable and smooth but still there are fields on which Mandriva teams needs not work..Taking Mandriva one the free distribution in mind, its an incomplete OS with respect to softwares and addons …
what do you need to pay for in mandriva, which other distros give away free!? One and Free are not stripped down versions of the Powerpack, although the Powerpack does include some paid for software, like lindvd and Cedega.
Optimum Stability , Support and a host of useful tools which will ease the use :- Ubuntu Gusty Gibbon.
what about the draktools, some of the best linux tools around?

Yeah, I didn't think it was a very unbiased review, so I decided to just let it go because the OP probably wasn't too interested in that. But I agree with your points. Mandriva has BY FAR the best GUI config tools of any distro. Mandriva comes with the biggest repo's of any distro (bigger than Ubuntu IIRC). Mandriva comes with all your non-free goodies included if you install the one version. Plus you get the opportunity to buy LinDVD for the only true legal DVD playback on linux (at least in the US) and Cedega. If you buy the two power-pack deal, I'm certain that you save money in the end. But these are just that... extras. You could buy them on your own, or you can buy them from Mandriva. But Mandriva is not charging you for things you could get free elsewhere.

It’s not correct to say you need to pay for a commercial edition of Mandriva to get things like Compiz plugins and games. These things are not included in One simply because space is heavily limited. There’s more packages for Mandriva than can fit on a DVD, never mind a single CD. All you have to do after installing One is set up the official repositories, by following these instructions - http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Docs/Basic_tasks/Installing_and_removing_software#Making_more_appli cations_available - or simply running the package manager and saying ‘yes’ when it asks if you want to add repositories.
The only packages that are exclusive to the Powerpack edition of Mandriva are ones that *could not* legally be included in any free-as-in-beer edition. There is nothing that Mandriva restricts to Powerpack that any other distribution does, or could, give you for free.

Ubuntu's repos are slightly larger than Mandriva's, I believe (if you include the Ubuntu repos that are basically unmodified Debian packages).
