Cursor theme files, when taken from Gnome-look...

Where do they need to be put in order to work?

there were older answers, but im wondering if theres any new ways to do this.

thanks a bunch.

The easiest way is to install gcursor. Than install the theme through gcursor.

Download the theme to an easily accessible location; ~/Desktop is good.
Install the gcursor package via Synaptic Package Manager or apt-get.
Start gcursor with System → Preferences → Cursor Selection.
Select a theme, or click 'Install theme' and select the compressed file to add it.
Once you're finished, select the theme you want to use and click "Close"

gcursor is no longer needed, jus drag the theme to the theme to the theme tab in the appearance dialog, then go customise and go to the pointers tab.

Whenever I tried that, I got an invalid theme file dialogue (or something like that)...could it have been that I was missing something from the archived file?

Extract the compressed file so you get the folder. Put it in .icons in your home directory.

i tried all of your methods and none of them worked, gcursor did not respond, when i tried putting the files in .icon it came up as icons rather than cursors so i'm a little lost

I'm actually having the exact same problem right now, except it tells me that it's been successfully installed... the theme just doesn't show up anywhere... I even copied the folders to share/icons... still nothing

I had the same problem with gcursor -- it wouldn't respond when I clicked [anything] on the interface.

But, I finally got the cursor theme installed... This is how!

1) Go to the "System" menu, "Preference" menu, and hit "Appearance."
2) Drag and drop the "cursor_blah.tar.gz" file into the Appearance window / Themes tab pane.
3) It should ask you "Apply New Theme?" "Keep Current Theme?" I'd choose "Keep Current Theme."
4) Then hit the "Customize" button at the bottom of the Themes tab pane, then hit the "Pointers" tab and you should see your cursor theme there as a choice!

There ya go, hope this helps anyone that is Googling the same problem!:KS

Thanks! However for step 3, I found that it was necessary to instead choose "Apply New Theme" in order for the cursor to show up under the pointers tab.

FINALLY LOL forgot how I did it.
IDK if this happens to everyone but once you apply the new cursor you can't see it. I can however see it when I use Firefox and of cursor once you restart or relog.
