Well I've been curious when this would happen. :)
This article is in regard to benchmarks of gaming performance with ATI's latest drivers on both OS's (respectively.)

I understand games hold back many users from switching from MS Windows to an alternative.
I have always had a hunch that on identical hardware, one with Linux and the other Windows, both with fully functional drivers, that Linux would make most efficient use of hardware...
Will more gamers shift over to the platform if they can get an increase in performance without having to upgrade hardware?

In some ways, I think the benchmarks are biased. Aren't all those openGL games? And isn't it a fairly well known fact that windows cripples openGL? So wouldn't it stand to reason that it might not be simply the drivers that are causing the difference, but rather some MS-enforced crippling of the application in Vista?
I would need to see comparisons with XP as well in order to fully buy this claim. I think its great news, and I think it backs up what I have believed all along... that ATI is doing there part to improve their linux support. Composite and Compiz support may have a bit left to go, but they are on the right track.
EDIT -> When I see UT3 benchmarks on Linux and Windows, then I will believe it. UT3 runs dx10 and dx9, and will have linux support. Should be interesting to compare UT3 linux to ut3 vista with dx10, and dx9, as well as ut3 dx9 on XP
EDIT #2 -> UT3 dx10 on Vista looks amazing, I've been playing the beta demo

OpenGL is up to the graphics driver implementation in windows I believe, Quake wars plays fine on XP and ubuntu for me on the same machine (nvidia) Vista was a bit slower though.(Probably the nvidia driver being crappy)

Unless MS removes this "crippling OpenGL" block, I've never heard about this... (on the other hand never really looked ;) ), the end result will be the same: Its performance will be worse on the same hardware.
The drivers did make some of the difference for sure, in a previous review, Linux had lower frame rates with the previous proprietary drivers release.

Why? It is a benchmark against Vista, MS will be dropping standard support for XP in 2 years or so... Maybe a better benchmark would be xP vs Vista?

I agree. Personally though, I'm satisfied with my on-board Intel open drivers :KS

The only way to know is to wait and see.
