MEPIS antiX 7.0, a light-weight edition of MEPIS Linux, has been released: "MEPIS has announced the 'Lysistrata' release of antiX, a light-weight derivative of SimplyMEPIS 7.0. This version of AntiX is built using the MEPIS Linux 7.0 core including the MEPIS 2.6.22 kernel and utilities, but mostly it has a different set of default user applications: Fluxbox and IceWM window managers, AbiWord, Gnumeric, Scite, Nano, Iceweasel, Sylpheed, Pidgin, XChat.... AntiX is designed to work on computers with as little as 64 MB RAM and Pentium II or equivalent AMD processors, but not K5/K6 processors. After installation, even 32 MB RAM has worked. The new ISO images are available in the 'released/antix' subdirectory at the MEPIS subscriber's site and at the MEPIS public mirrors."

I was given an old Dell laptop (p2/266 128 ram) with no network jack or card, so online updating is not possible. That pretty much ruled out Arch for me.
I put Antix 7m rc on it and was very impressed. The Fluxbox wm has been nicely set up and the applications were well chosen for older hardware. I'm now interested in buying a network pcmcia card and seeing if I can get online with it to update it. It could turn into a usable computer thanks to Antix.

Mepis is pretty darn good. So having that as the foundation for a Fluxbox distro should be VERY interesting.

Thanks for the update. I recently downloaded 6.5, since the version I have is far too old. Hopefully the new version of Mepis that Antix is based on supports my hardware as well as the previous versions.

Yes! I have updated the antiX page at Distropedia and will do a "proper" review soon. So far, it's been perfect so there's not much to write about.;-)

Aubrey there are some bugs if you look for them. Not serious, but annoying.
init1, antiX Lysistrata will not work with k5/k6. Other than that it should be fine.

k5/k6? I've never heard of it. Mepis is the only distro that supports my wireless card automatically, so that's my main concern.

K5/K6 are old AMD processors, around at the time of Pentium II/III.

Shouldn't be an issue for me. I'll be running it on an i686.
