Ventrilo 2.1 or 2.2 + directsound?

So I've got Ventrilo working fine through wine (all versions), but the problem I'm running into is that I can't hear more than one person speak at a time. This issue is easily solved in 2.3 simply by checking the "Use DirectSound for output" checkbox, but since I spend quite alot of time on servers running the free Ventrilo, I would love a way to somehow apply this to Ventrilo clients 2.1 or 2.2 (which are missing the DirectSound checkbox).

I've been doing some digging but can't find anyone solving this issue for those client versions. Anyone got any ideas?

Gave Mumble/Murmur a try, but there was some trouble with configuration and settings for everyone. Still hoping to find a way to use ventrilo.
