Just drag the file you download into the theme window. (if you download otherstiff like icons and cursors, you'll have to select "customize" once you have your new theme installed.)

I just got some themes from a friend and I am trying to apply one of them but when I check
System-> preferences-> I do not find themes there. .
What could be the problem, is the a terminal code to open the theme manager?

Try System -> Preferences -> View (or something like that).

I use emerald and get my themes from www.beryl-project.org. Emerald just seems nicer (purdier) than the GTK themes.
just download the themes to desktop, change the file type to ".emerald", open emerald and click the "Import Themes" button and add the themes you've downloaded.

Try Appearance. It took me quite some time to find that, too.

It is underneath Systems--->Preferences--->Appearance which to me is freaking stupid! Hey, whatever it has some changes to it. I don't think it should have changed, but oh well...:popcorn:
