Okay. It is said that learning something new everyday is good for the mind. So here's a thread for all those who want to learn those useless pieces of trivia which will be GREAT at part-ays!

I'll start with;

Human beings are the only one's who when you point with your finger, will look in the direction of your finger. All animals will automatically look at the end of your finger!

Another:
Human beings love to collect useless pieces of trivia just for fun. :)

Just kidding, here's a real one.

The most dangerous animal in the world is the common housefly. Because of their habits of visiting animal waste, they transmit more diseases than any other animal.

That's a good one! I never knew that!

There is a novel (I forget the name so don't ask) which is of normal novel size (approx 350 pages) which does not contain the letter 'E' throughout the entire book!

asjdfwejqrfjcvm msz34rq33
October 28th, 2007, 09:12 PM
Wow, who would spend their time writing a book just so they can say that it doesn't contain the letter "E" in it?

Human jaw muscles can generate a force of 200 pounds (90.8 kilograms) on the molars.

asjdfwejqrfjcvm msx34rq33 (great name btw (there are two views on the subject. One, he wasn't very good at learning, secondly, he did it on purpose - I tend to go with the latter myself))

In relation to yours...;

It takes over 20 muscles to frown whereas smiling only takes 4 muscles. Smile. C'mon. You know you want to ;D

asjdfwejqrfjcvm msz34rq33
October 28th, 2007, 11:06 PM
Hopefully it was the latter. :lolflag:

But are we the only ones who love useless facts?

This one's impressive.

Ten minutes of one hurricane contains enough energy to match the nuclear stockpiles of the world.

Actually, 55% of the population can read it.

I love trivia also.

Here is something that people sometimes find interesting :)

The names of the months (in english) show that there should only be ten months, October (8), November (9) and December (10), the extra two months are July and August. July was created by Julius Caesar, and had 31 days. His nephew (Octavius), the first emporer, made a month in his own name (after being named "Augustus") which is August. August also has 31 days, so that his month would be equal to his uncle's. February lost a day in this creation. July and August are the only consecutive months with 31 days, because of this.

One of my favorite obscure topics is the the water bear (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waterbear). This is an entire phylum of microscopic creatures that live everywhere on the planet, but are completely unknown to most people. They can

1) Survive extreme heat and extreme cold
2) Go into a state of suspended animation when they become dehydrated
3) Live through several hundred times the amount of radioactive exposure that humans can.

An old one from an IRC trivia bot questions file.
The longest English word which can be typed with only one hand (using the typing rules) is 'stewardesses'.

As we're here to Learn something new everyday, could you explain what the typing rules are?

p_quarles
November 12th, 2007, 09:03 PM
Presumably the "typing rules" refer to the standard correct way of typing (for best speed, accuracy): index fingers on the "f" and "j" keys, never and never reach across.

On a QWERTY keyboard, then "stewardesses" would be spelled out using only the left hand.

The longests words on a qwerty keyboard that can be typed, without punctuation:

with right hand:

hypolimnion

with left hand:

tesseradecades, aftercataracts, sweaterdresses

###########################################

The longest words on a Dvorak keyboard that can be typed, without punctuation:

with right hand:

crwth

(I knew the above word, it is an instrument)

with left hand:
papaya, Kikuyu, opaque, upkeep

###########################################

The dumbest thing I ever did was almost misspell "QWERTY", when I typed it above, I actually thought about it.

This is incorrect. Domesticated dogs and domesticated foxes will look in the direction you are pointing or looking in.

Good article.

The research involving ravens is also fascinating. They are smarter than many think. (they get the string connection that didn't quite work out with dogs)

....Australian scientists worried about global warming have turned to one of Mother Nature's cleanest "natural gas" producers, the kangaroo, for help. It seems that when kangaroos fart, the stuff contains none of the methane produced by cattle and sheep breaking wind. Scientists want to transfer the bacteria from kangaroos' stomachs to those animals to cut down on their noxious emissions, AFP reports.

Studies have shown that made up numbers are just as accurate as carefully crafted ones. How many studies? 87.

Okay, not really. ;)

The real fact is below.:

The hair of a polar bear is not white, it is clear. The snow reflects off of it and makes it look white.

Someone might already know this:
The hummingbird is the only type of bird (or vertebrate for that matter, i think) that can intentionally fly backwards (have you seen birds flying in the wind? When the winds hits them in the face, they go backwards, but still have enough lift to keep them suspended in the air)

Also

The highest 'weight-carrying-capacity' to 'actual weight' of any living organism in the world is the Ant (10:1). Meaning it can carry 10x its own weight.
Its like a 220 lb man (100 kg) carrying 2200 lbs (1000kg).
