I like Mint a lot. Will 4.0 have plug-and-use printer support like Gutsy?

i would think it will, since it is based on gutsy.

Thanks for the torrent. The HTTP download crashed and burned miserably, then DTA went and deleted all traces of the temporary download when it was at 60%. Sigh.

The XFCE version uses WICD (which is awesome)
I thought the other versions still used networkmanager?!?

Like I keep saying Linux Mint is Ubuntu done almost right.
They are really beginning to show Ubuntu how it should be done.
I predict they will eventually over take Ubuntu in popularity as more people find out they can have Ubuntu and have it look nice and be easy to use.

From what I've seen so far, Linux Mint certainly does look good. I'm yet to see it in action before deciding whether or not I should use it on my desktop.
Darn thing is downloading at 6kB/s though. Curses be to my "beloved" ISP, TMNut Screamyx.

For you, sure. For me ? Not. ;)

In your point of view. But for other people ?

Is gutsy hard to use for adding non-free software ? Don't think so ;)
Only time will tell for which distro takes over which one.

I think you should think very hard about what you are saying... a lot of linux mint's differences cannot be incorporated in Ubuntu because of legal issues and I don't think you should be as damning on the Ubuntu devs.

i know it's tough to go to synaptic and install update manager. get real. and further more, updates will be available in mint 4.0. do some research.

Im going to agree with every one of these counter remarks... It may feel done correct to you but to me it's just useless looks and such. While they do have a few things that may be useful I feel Gutsy is much better and also has my 64 bit. Also Mint is behind Ubuntu as it always waits for it to release then builds on it. I like to get it right away. :) To each their own tho

I tried it but couldn't really see how they improved it apart from integrating some easily installed codecs and changed the look a bit.
I might be wrong but it looks and feels to me like a slightly tweaked Ubuntu, not impressed but each to there own I guess.

I must say that in terms of post-installation (fresh install without extra packages/configuration) and livecd usage, Mint is a great improvement. Codecs are there, among other extra packages. Beyond that I can't say there's much difference. The Mint* programs certainly do help make the distro more user-friendly than Ubuntu though.

Not using network manager would be a good start. Having the menu end up like in mint would be hard to accomplish by yourself too. The codecs go a long way into getting people who use windows to switch, specially when most of the rest of the world do not have any legal barriers to include them ( and going to pure GNU/Linux and Open Software is a bit of an advance commitment to ask from windows or mac users ).
I see enough for a fork, although I think too many things get called a "distro" ( For example I would call Kubuntu, Fluxbuntu, Edubuntu, Xubuntu, Mint, etc. Ubuntu mods, not new distros altogether. )

When I tried out Daryna I noticed that it still used NetworkManager. However I read somewhere that Linux Mint is to use WICD instead of NM. When will it be so?

That looks pretty cool. While I use Ubuntu myself and have no plans to use Linux Mint in the near future, it definitely looks promising and it's one of the distros I recommend to friends.
