my personal preference is to re-install. i see too many people beating their heads into the ground over little things that can be fixed by re-installing. instead they spend hours troubleshooting. only to be back at square one. it takes me 1 hour and 15 min to get back where i was. seems like alot less trouble than searching and prodding for answers. then again, my problems are minimal.

I do a fresh install for upgrades and for everything else I backup.

i reinstalled today after completely screwing up the mpd.conf file. i tried to fix it, ended up deleting it and then finding out it didn't just magically appear if i reinstalled mpd. even getting someone to post a copy of there didn't work out (his was fine, so it must have been something else). so, i reinstalled the whole system. took me 20 minutes.

also, being a distro ***** means that re-installing is a non-issue. OS's typically last 1 to 2 weeks anyway.

I'll either fix the problem or restore from a backup.

It depends on the type of problem. I remember having X gone for almost 24 hours, but I finally got everything up and running again. Personally I love troubleshooting.

Desktop related problems can usually be fixed by creating a new user account. That is another quick fix for common trouble.
