I did a fresh install of xubuntu 7.10 on my iMac G3 DV SE (500MHz, 640MB RAM, ATI Rage 128 ) but now when I try to boot into it it dies. The last message on the screen before it dies is "Loading, please wait..." which is displayed for about a second after all the open firmware stuff.

This is what I mean by "it dies": sometimes it powers off entirely, others it appears to sort of half-power off, in which case the power light dims and it slowly whirs to a stop (while it emits a sinister clicking sound) and I have to force the power off.

It did the same thing when I booted from the Live CD initially (only on the iMac, not my PowerBook G4), but I worked around that by specifying "live-nosplash" as the boot option. Is there any way of fixing this without reinstalling?

I have a working copy of the Finnix PPC LiveCD which I could boot into and change things if that is necessary.

Don't use Gutsy on PPC, it is too buggy. Go for Dapper, or other release...
