I am sorry for reposting this old worn subject, but I have literally been working on this for the past 12 hours, I've tried dozens of tutorials and searched about a hundred threads.

So that I could get help as easily as possible, this is what I've got in my Log etc.

WW) fglrx(0): Kernel Module version does *not* match driver.
(EE) fglrx(0): incompatible kernel module detected - HW accelerated OpenGL will not work
(II) fglrx(0): [drm] removed 1 reserved context for kernel
(II) fglrx(0): [drm] unmapping 8192 bytes of SAREA 0xe0b97000 at 0xb7da4000
(WW) fglrx(0): ***********************************************
(WW) fglrx(0): * DRI initialization failed! *
(WW) fglrx(0): * (maybe driver kernel module missing or bad) *
(WW) fglrx(0): * 2D acceleraton available (MMIO) *
(WW) fglrx(0): * no 3D acceleration available *
(WW) fglrx(0): ********************************************* *

This is the problem I noticed when searching through the xorg log file.
This is what I get from fglrxinfo

display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (1.5 Mesa 6.2.1)

My xorg.config should be alright, but here it is anyway.

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following commands:
#
# cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.custom
# sudo sh -c 'md5sum /etc/X11/xorg.conf >/var/lib/xfree86/xorg.conf.md5sum'
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Was easy as cake for me, before I moved to an NVIDIA 6800GT. I don't think you mentioned the card you're using. Are you sure your card is supported by the Catalyst drivers (see http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/linux_8.16.20.html)?

From what I remember, it was as easy as:

sudo apt-get install build-essential
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r`
cd /tmp
sudo wget http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ati-driver-installer-8.16.20-i386.run
sudo killall gdm
sudo sh ./ati-driver-installer-8.16.20-i386.run

Here's my xorg.conf when I was running a 9800 PRO.

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)

# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
