I know a lot of major corporations use Linux on there servers. Wouldn't it be ironic if Microsoft had a bunch of Linux servers handling there updates and downloads?

Ya know, it wouldn't surprise me, considering the crap I've dealt with using Windows servers. If I was a Windows developer and I had a say, I sure as heck wouldn't put up with it. But, it'd take a whole heap 'o money to get me to develop Windows...

apparently Redmond has the odd Red Hat box floating around they are apparently used in the development side of things. How far its true i don't know but thats what i have heard. I also heard that there access control in the Redmond building is run on a Linux system. Also the MSN hosting center use to run with McAfee AV. if thats the case and they did happen to have a Mcafee Webshield or Sniffer device, they would have definitely had Linux boxes in there network as both the above devices run on hardened Linux Op systems

:lolflag: i would not be surprised if they do use linux for a server or two, ...not at all!

Hotmail used to run BSD it still might. I heard some Microsoft web site servers were found to be running Linux Apache

I wonder if Canonical has MS workstations.

I wonder if Canonical has MS workstations.

I'm sure they do, but canonical doesn't openly bash the effectiveness of
Microsofts workstations, so the irony isn't there. If your going to troll at least do a good job at it. :)

They are using it in some way. I'm just not sure how they use it. I'm quite positive that Microsoft-IIS/6.0 does not run on Linux. I'm sure it is in tandem with one of their systems. Maybe somone could explain it to me.

Well lets be honest and unbiased about this. Linux is a bit more secure and less affected buy viruses, then MS Server. So for a large corporation that needs to have a server running 24 7 you need something stable. and if you are a company responsible for updates that can impact on business you wont want one of your download links to be redirected to a site that will download a nasty little bit of script that could cause a major global disaster when mistaken for a security update.

Least not forget about the PR horror if something like that should happen.

Apparently some of the graphics on the Ubuntu site were made in photoshop.

Most companies mix and match their operating systems. Professionally speaking, different operating systems are better at different tasks. People use what's best for the job in hand or what they've been trained to use. So it's not really that big a deal whether MS use Linux or Cannonical use Windows. As long as the job they want to do gets done it's all ok. I dont think it's an admission of one operating system being better than another.

There is a website (well several) that tell you what server is hosting a particular URL. I suppose you could check all of the domains MS owns. I just cannot remember the URL off hand.

From www.netcraft.com the first 100 results for the domain microsoft.com.

It looks like the vast majority are Windows Server 2003, but there are a few Linux and BSD server used by MS-affiliates, not MS itself.

Try this FF add-ons. It tells you what kinda server the website is running.

When installed, hoover your mouse over it or click on it.
