View Full Version : Hoary beginning to handle root user differently?

Well, it seems that recent upgrades have moved my Synaptic to the applications menu, and have added a new application called shares. Until recently, I couldn't run shares at all, because it was telling me that my password was incorrect. But this wasn't much of a problem, because I didn't really need it. However, when Synaptic moved over, and I couldn't run that either, I realized that there was a subtle difference in the password prompt. It says "enter the root's password" rather than prompting for my password. Does all this mean that Hoary is moving away from using sudo? I have not yet set a password for root, and have gotten very used to using sudo for running anything with root privilages. If this does mean a change, could I ask why?

Well, not really. It just means that the Debian/original version used 'root', and the devs haven't gotten around to patching it for sudo yet.

You can use shares by giving root a password:
sudo passwd root
It's not the Ubuntu way, but it works ;)

Better yet, edit the launcher to point to gksudo shares-admin instead. Hopefully this sudo model will be implemented in future revisions of this package.

Maybe shares should be moved to system configuration, because it is more of a configuration thing than a tool.
