There's an autopackage of 0.42 available (http://www.inkscape.org/download.php)... Just make sure you don't have any prior version of Inkscape installed when you use it ;)

Pardon my ignorance, but how would one go about uninstalling Inkscape .40, please?

You can just log into synaptic and do a search for inkscape. If the old version is installed, just click the square on the left and choose "uninstall".

Oh! right. Thank you. I forget about Synaptic because I use it rarely (my Linux-box is not connected to the net).
