Compiz Fusion blur problem

I have a Dell E510 desktop with Gutsy Gibbon on it, and I have a fairly big problem regarding Compiz Fusion: Everything seems to work except blur. When I check the blur box, my computer starts running really slow, and nothing is actually blurred. I've tried changing many blur settings but with no luck.

I know my computer is powerful enough to handle it: 3.4 GHz Pentium 4 with 4 GB of RAM, and an ATI Radeon x600 graphics card

Does anyone have an idea as to what I can do?

And by the way, I have read numerous other solutions to similar problems and none have worked
