I downloaded the game and installed it fine on gutsy, but when I log into a server and start to play the graphics are so bad that I cant see anything even the menus. Everything is just very dark and rough. Is there any way I can open the options menu on the first screen so I can adjust everything that way?

Now that I just installed warsow I see that it tells me that I need a new proprietary driver to display openGL. I guess this is my problem and I will look into this. Any help with this will be appreciated.

You probably just need to install a driver that takes advantage of your graphics hardware. What video card do you have?

Do you have compiz-fusion turned on? ie "desktop-effects" go to System->Preferences->Appearence and turn off the effects then try running the game again.
